Stamina

The survival mechanics I’ve been working on for some time are roughly done, they just need some tweaking. Here’s a video showing how stamina (which is one of them) works:

http://youtu.be/nJjV5WqZw3k

This will only be active in Challenging, Cruel and Adventure modes. Harmless and (obviously) Creative stay as they are.

What do you think? Is it not too annoying?

If you haven’t read my earlier posts about survival: the reason for stamina is so that it’s not so easy to run away from the animals that chase you. It also adds more player immersion (pun intended) and makes the world more dangerous, which is badly needed.

Right now I am working on something new that will make animals a lot more dangerous and realistic than they are now. If it works out, together with stamina, hunger and sleep, 1.22 will really flesh out the survival aspect. I’ll tell you more in another post.

Thank you for all the magnet recipes. I still haven’t decided which one to use. Especially the lodestone concept is cool – never thought of that! But I don’t want to add a new mineral just for the sake of one or two items. Unless I come across an idea on how to use lodestone sensibly somewhere else, I’ll sadly have to skip it. Ideas welcome.

At the moment I think the recipe should be just that:

Magnet
But it seems too simple…

In the meantime daverave40 published 19th episode of his Let’s Play Survivalcraft series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zCrtziB0II

[EDIT]

Here’s some numbers to help you better judge the stamina system:

  • You can run about 300 blocks until you start to pant and slow down (on level ground)
  • After about 400 blocks you’re fully exhausted and move at 50% speed
  • About 40 jumps in quick succession will get you exhausted and unable to jump any more
  • It takes just 3 seconds of rest to restore you to full performance
  • About 10 seconds more of rest will make you fully rested (i.e. able to run another 400 blocks / make 40 jumps).
  • Walking on stairs/ladders counts like moving on flat terrain.

Drowning it’s ok, but stamina out of the water sould recover also while walking and just be affected while running. Jumping by itself souldn’t use stamina, only while jumping and running all together.
To compensate that, make some animals runs faster.
If not, exploring could be anoying becouse you are jumping a lot and “too much” reality in a game is not that good…

I agree maybe you should only be able to Sprint for a while then have to walk for ten seconds before you can Sprint again, but with making sleep a part of the game your already ensuring the player rests. It’s seems like the panting noise and pop up words will get really annoying on long journeys. Drowning looks good but I do t see the need to keep flashing your drowning, once you start bobbing up and down and seeing red flashes it’s pretty obvious.

Scrap the stamina. The panting sounds will get annoying fast.

I’m just not a fan of stamina drains in this type of game, when it does nothing except waste my time because I have to stand around, do nothing but wait for the character to catch his breath. Maybe food can be used in some way to counter stamina drains if you must have that.

The game is good, it might be more fun if there’s a bit more danger, but please don’t make the mistake of adding unneeded or annoying features that get in the way of the core gameplay.

    • Posted May 10, 2013 at 01:26 | Permalink | Reply

Thanks for the great comment, keep them coming. I knew this feature will be controversial.

Here’s my take on it: in Challenging mode the core gameplay is survival – getting winded is part of the survival experience and it increases danger if you don’t have proper infrastructure (stairs/ladders/horses/camels). If you want to just build, there’s Creative and Harmless.

Some numbers: you can run about 300 blocks until you start to pant and slow down (on level ground), at 400 blocks you’re exhausted and move at 50% speed. About 40 jumps in quick succession will also get you exhausted. It takes just 3 seconds of rest to restore you to full performance. About 10 seconds more of rest will make you fully rested (i.e. able to run another 400 blocks / 40 jumps). Walking on stairs/ladder counts like moving on flat terrain.

The majority of players I know for Minecraft like to play survival because gathering materials, building, and fighting off hostile monsters is a perfect mix. I’ve played creative for all of 30 minutes, ever. It’s not fun for me, I want to “earn” those blocks. I’ve never played on peaceful/harmless. Never. Not once. Digging is fun, building is fun, fighting monsters is fun.

So here’s the thing, the changes you are suggesting affect how I play this game. I love the realistic tone, I love the survivor feel. I just hate the idea of putting in things that pretend to add realism that really only just punish me arbitrarily. None of these stamina changes give me anything. It’s all downside, no upside. I don’t want to hear panting, I don’t want to be nagged to sleep or rest or stop moving.

40 blocks of jumping leaves you exhausted? The path down into my mine is more than 40 blocks, that means climbing out (in total safety) will require me to stop and wait for a few seconds. Why? What does that gain me? How does that make my experience better? I’m being forced, against my will, to stop and do nothing when I have things I want to be getting on with. I’ll spend those few seconds doing nothing but sitting there getting angry.

I know you want animals to be more dangerous. I’d like that too. Then simply make them have a larger aggro radius. Or make them pursue you longer. Or make them more numerous. The chances that *maybe* I might get tired at the same moment that an animal is chasing me seems a very chaotic way of doing things. What if I run from one pack of wolves, escape, only to find I’ve run straight into another pack of animals and I’m too exhausted to run? I’m not going to think “how realistic”, I’m going to start cursing at something that was pretty much outside of my control.

It’s the same with the sleeping. Needing to sleep every so often. Well I’ll slap down a dozen blocks of dirt to make a box and climb in. That’s not hard, that poses no challenge, but it’s still something I’m going to be forced to do once in a while to pretend it’s realistic? I’m carrying 500 blocks of stone in my pocket, the days are 10 minutes long, and you’re worried about insomnia being immersion-breaking? What is more disruptive to me as a player is needing to do things that eat into my playing time, that offer nothing in return. Once you add up all the time wasted waiting for the sleep cycle/stamina recovery to end it’s going to end up being a significant amount of time.

On the other side, I LOVE hunger mechanics. Needing to eat means needing to have a source of food. Getting food means crafting traps and weapons, going hunting, exposing myself to risk. Later on it will hopefully mean farming, and possibly even semi-automating that farming process using machines I get to craft and build. I get to build dedicated storage areas, maybe a kitchen and dining room for my house/castle/cave so that I can theme my food area to my build. Hunger adds things to do, it adds reasons to play the game. It adds fun.

Stopping to rest and doing nothing for a few seconds? All that does is steal my time.

I love this game, I really honestly do play it instead of Minecraft on the Xbox now. I love what you’ve done sign it, and I love where it could go. These stamina rules so far are arbitrary and gamey, they done’t emerge naturally from the world systems that you have set in place so far. They are a design choice that goes against all the other things that you have created. I just want to be able to continue to play SurvivalCraft, in survival mode, without worrying that “well, it’s been 10 minutes, better spend 30 seconds sleeping whether I want to or not”. Or climbing out of my mine and having to endure annoying wheezing sounds and then stopping for a few seconds “just because”.

Put that in cruel, make it a toggle in options, or better yet just leave it and focus on making sure the player is well fed. I wouldn’t mind getting tired and needing to rest all the time if I hadn’t eaten. Fine, encourage eating, that’s a good thing as described earlier. Well fed players getting tired by walking in a straight line for one minute … ugh.

        • Posted May 10, 2013 at 03:04 | Permalink

Thanks for your long comment. Maybe it’s time to build stairs to your mine. The stamina system will make it worthwhile. Climbing out of deep mines without stairs/ladders will get you winded very fast. That’s how it makes the experience better.

honestly, to me the whole stamina idea is great but it just a little to short, if it was increased or maybe you only lose stamina when you RUN (this means you will have to add some way to run) and jump. this would make it more realistic because people can walk long distances without getting tired. and you could even work this in to the food gauge where it depletes faster when you walk/ run. also, to make things more realistic add stamina and food gauges to animals as well. such as wolves not being able to run for ever and having to chase cow or horse to eat. or horse only being able to gallop for two days strait and all animals need to eat such as cows, horses, bulls, boars and giraffes eat grass/ leaves while bears and wolves eat other animals. same goes for fish, rays eat underwater plants or even algae, which can be like snow on land, and piranhas eat rays wile sharks eat both. even bird can land and eat from the ground or even swoop in the water and catch a ray or piranha.

to me this would be more realistic and make the game seem more competitive in the goal to survive. this will also mean you will have a harder time getting food considering the carnivores in the game eat your main source of meat and most of the time don’t drop meat. and the fact that they need to eat and they have stamina makes it that much more realistic, they could even sleep to make it harder for them to live because they cant defend or run until after the first hit.

          Sorry, forgot to add something.

If you were to add stamina in water it would be silly as well due to the fact that you would die to often or waste to much time getting around it, and with the new terrain generator there are a lot of large lakes, and water stamina will make the game look bad. Honestly you might want to change the whole stamina thing before releasing it or the game will get allot of bad reviews based on it. And you might want to be able to toggle if you want stamina and hunger when making and uploading adventure maps, mainly for the reason, many maps can be big and open or have very little food available. I know this because I am currently building a zelda adventure map that has very little food and allot of traveling.

I love the idea of stamina but can you please clarify it a little more. Does the horse that u r riding have a limit? If so what would happen to it. Also if u stop swimming will you regain stamina even if u aren’t on land? As for climbing mountains i have a good idea. How about you can make a rope and harness where you can throw the rope up(maybe 10 or 20 blocks) and that allows you to jump 2 or three blocks where it only counts as 1 stamina wise. It should also require you to swing the rope around a few times in order to throw it so u can’t just use it as a way to escape predators. I recently commented some other ideas too so if u see this u can check them out

I agree that stamina is only going to be a time waster. It’s going to make challenging mode more of a tedious mode.
The hunger idea is great. I always end up with too much food even on challenging mode. Sleep I can live with or without. I usually like to take complete indoor tasks at night i.e. mining, smelting, crafting but I guess I can change my habits.
I also like to explore long distances. Go out 10 days in one direction then 10 days in another direction etc.

With the addition of required sleep, hunger and more dangerous animals, a 1 day trip is already going to be a lot shorter distance. If you throw stamina on top of that there won’t be much point in trying to get anywhere. Granted one could ride a horse but they will run away while you’re sleeping. If I have to build a shelter for both my mount and my character every night I’ll be lucky to move more than half the distance I can go now.

So far I don’t see any benefit from the stamina factor.

If you include stamina it would be great to make a way to keep our mounts from running off.
Also, making a new difficulty level would be great. Harmless, Difficult (same as challenging now but no stamina), Challenging and cruel.

Please do not add stamina unless there is sprinting(sprinting drains stamina) there also should be some bars in “player button section” that shows how much running stamina you have left and how low you are on hunger. Also, growing food to harvest would be a much appreciated feature

Im glad your making it more difficult. If you don’t want more difficult then play on harmless. Right now challenging mode isn’t challenging at all in terms of staying alive. I’ve read some posts where people say they don’t want these options on challenging because they don’t want to switch to harmless. That’s like saying you want to play a first person shooter on hard…. but you don’t want people shooting at you very much. That is the whole point of difficulty levels.

    just my 2 cents.

Kaalus, if your looking for ideas to make animals Moe difficult… I don’t know if you read my post a couple threads ago about the saddle breaking idea for the horses. or if its even something you would consider. I think it would add a fun little smidgin of realism to catching the wild horses. I wont type it all out again here because you probably did see it.

Thanks for working so hard. Can’t wait for the UPDATE!!

Nothing suggested so far makes the game harder. Saying “play it on harmless” doesn’t help. That makes it easier, and I don’t want easier. But again, these stamina changes don’t make it harder. It only makes it slower.

Getting tired isn’t going to kill me, it’s just going to make me wait until I am not tired. It’s a tax on my time. It’s going to take a small percentage of each gaming session and make sure that in that time I get to do nothing but wait. Nothing but wait.

Agree w/ parking tigers. We like it challenging. If we play on harmless, the animals are non-aggressive and digging speed is a bit faster. We don’t want the game nerfed, but aren’t really seeing any benefit to the proposed stamina mechanics – they sound more like a bother than a challenge.

I think that you should be able to run longer but if you run the full time you’ll have to break longer and/or make sprint an option and walk your normal speed and make coyotes and wolves run faster than you except when sprinting then you’ll be the same speed

    – when ur on a horse and u hit ur head on a leaf/ brach u dies instantly!!!! ( gotta switch this, maybe fall of horse that’s it)

Since food no longer heals us you should add bandages or herbs. Also the stamina runs out a bit fast so can u make it so if you run enough without get too exhausted your stamina starts to increase over time. But if you run too much to the point where you almost or do faint then your stamina should decrease for a while until your muscles recover.

Kaalus, please, make an option to enable and disable stamina mechanics. I love hunger, but stamina mechanics kinda suck and are just annoying. I thought when you mentioned stamina you meant the ability to run, and other simple functions. This is way over the limit. Removes my playtime, gets very annoying. Please add an OPTION so that I can play survival challenging or cruel without an annoying and somewhat pointless mechanic like stamina!

I know you want to make Survivalcraft more dangerous, more survival. But this will screw the game up royally for me if implemented by force without an option to adjust to the stamina system without being able to switch back and forth from it :/

I love idea it really adds realism. I have an idea what if you added a jungle kind of biome and along with the animals in the biome add coffee beans that grow on trees there and if you put like milk and the beans inside a crafting area and get coffee which could boost your stamina and let you go longer. I also find the lodestone idea interesting and I think it could be a good block moving system. Another two additions I would like is for gold, gold ore, and gold blocks and butter. I don’t know what butter would be used for I just would like it in game.

Maybe try to extend the stamina limit to make it less frequent. A sprint feature is ideal to make use of realistic situations ex. running from wolves, prepping a long jump, etc. Maybe for the panting sound it should be played for about 5 seconds after the notification, then toned down afterward, then made louder again on the next notification, and etc.

Nice graphic addition to swimming where the water texture is overlayed onto the screen to make it difficult to see underwater. At some point some type of equipment has to be made to enable underwater travel for deep fishing. Many mechanics can be implemented using stamina, maybe contributing to mining time.

I was thinking about maybe add a herbal drink to temporarily restore stamina, such as pine tea, made from pine nettles (spruce leaves) and boiled water. Ingame, it can reset the stamina meter and tiredness meter for sleep, but at the cost of a little health drain, since it is unhealthy to overclock the body.

Like I said, there’s plenty of room to extend the use of stamina.

Regardless of what people may be saying now, I predict a mass exodus to Harmless mode once people get tired of these proposed changes (stamina, hunger, deadlier animals, etc.).

Many people don’t even make their own paint. They switch to creative, paint, and then switch back. If people are that lazy, do you think they’ll really put up with a drastically more tedious Challenging mode? I could be wrong but I think the answer is going to be “no”.

Ya me either. Kaalus the game is so great right now. Stamina is gonna suck unless u make a sprint button that goes on. We should be able to go at the speed we r at forever. Nobody gets tired after 400 steps. More like after 1000. And jumping 40 blocks as way to Little. If u add stamina u really gotta add a sprint. Leave what u have as it is.

      Posted May 10, 2013 at 12:44 | Permalink | Reply

It is, and yet it isn’t. It depends on what Survival Craft wants to be.

I play MCPE as well, and the thing I like about that game is the feeling of gradually becoming the master of my surroundings. I can secure sources of lumber, food (not that I need it yet), and animal products, I can build armor to make scouting for non-renewables safer, and with enough time and ingenuity I can even take advantage of the world physics to “farm” monster drops in complete safety if I so choose. What it doesn’t have is a world big enough to make doing it feel worthwhile.

SC doesn’t have that. Trees are the closest thing to a genuinely renewable resource, and even those are a bit of a gamble since saplings die more often than they grow. (Cow milk is the next thing down, but since cows despawn if you get too far away from them…) Add the hunger and fatigue mechanics and the whole feel of the game changes. Just staying alive becomes a constant struggle because you can’t build tools and infrastructure to make surviving easier.

There’s nothing wrong with that since it makes SC a very different game from MC, as long as the balance is right. Make surviving too difficult and it starts getting in the way of doing anything else, and I think that’s the concern people are really expressing.

I think, considering there is a mixed reaction to the new stamina features, it would be better to make it an obligatory feature on Cruel mode, and for Challenging make it a feature you can toggle off and on.

If this is possible. This way, everybody wins.

To people complaining about it, you forget that horses an camels were added in the last update. What the stamina feature does is make horses and camels much more valuable when traveling long distances. Like in real life. Not many people can travel long distances without a mode of transportation.

What I would recommend is somehow incorporate stamina and hunger into the inventory menu, providing us with a more detailed situation of our status. I know, it’s not realistic to know exactly how tired we are or what percentage of hunger we are at, but those 4 empty boxes need a function. You could show in percentages how much stamina and hunger we have remaining.

    Just some idea.

Love the game, by the way. I haven’t played one of these types of games before (yes that means no Mine Craft) but you did a great job with this one. Keep it up Kaalus!

Hi Kaalus. For the magnet, I like the simple recipe but why not put a battery in the middle to make an electromagnet. This would not only be more powerful than the natural magnetic field and therefore would divert the compass away from pointing North, it would also give a.legitimate and needed use for the batteries.

I fear that the non-stop breathing you’ll be hearing when moving around will be getting on your nerves very fast.

As many people said previously, it would make more sense to :

    – Make attacking ennemies faster (slightly faster than regular walk mode of your toon
    – Have a “run” mode – only running / jumping / swimming deplete stamina.
    – Stamina regens only if you’re idle.

Then stamina becomes a ressource to manage, rather than someting that always

Agreed with Adani, too – electromagnets would be great ! :)

Here is my opinion…not that it matters. I like the idea of having to sleep every couple days…that is fine. But i feel like this stamina thing could be done in a different way. The idea of having to stop and rest every minute just doesnt sound fun. And the whole point of a game is to be fun. I think there should just be a sprint button. We can walk a certain speed without getting tired. But once we use the sprint button, a stamina bar pops up and drains for as long as we are sprinting and eventually runs out. Does this make sense to anyone else or does anyone else agree? I realize this is completely different then the original idea and would require alot of reworking…but i just seems more practical.

I agree and really like this idea. There should definately be sprinting and the stamina should go much slower when walking. In fact, normal occasional pauses while walking could be enough to keep you going without getting too tired. sneak mode should not effect stamina at all.

This idea kinda has some middle ground to it too and would solve some of the complaints people are having about having to rest all the time. Those people could either ride a horse or not sprint unless they had too.

I think you should add a sea update. Firdt you should add a sea biome with islands spawning rare. This biome should be BIG because i dont think its quite right to have a sea biome at the size of other biomes. Secound you can add a ship.( I know your adding boats but a ship is cooler at the sea)
Third add fishing rods so you can fish.
You should add crabs at beaches.
You should add chutulus that are only in sea biomes. They should replace werewolves and climb up at islands at night to kill you.
Last you should add fish neta and crab traps so you can set them in the sea and the next they you could drag them up and get lots of fish/crab.

Maybe if we need a new food source, he could add maple trees. They could grow in snowy forests and be tapped for maple sap. The sap could then be turned into maple syrup:) Maple sugar could then be made from further processing.

Hey you all, leave kaalus alone, im disappointed on you all, I don’t care if I have to change al of my worlds to harmless mode, ill do it if I don’t like the survival stuff, but think about it, you can sleep under trees, and you can kill cows and others, of course, I think it should be a LITTLE longer, but its ok if he can’t do that, i will always play survivalcraft, even if he adds something horrible, because im a true survivalcraft general, and always will be

Yo! Add lions, tigers, leopards and panthers. Big cats rule! Also, you need WAY more sea animals. Add crabs, clams, dolphins, orcas and whales. And P.S. an elephant would be awesome.

Sometime in 1.23 or something, add dragons. That would be epic! Just don’t make to many of them or it will get really difficult. Speaking of flying animals, I forgot to mention that you should add eagles and owls.

Animals should have too. Different animals have more stamina than others(e.g Wolves can run further than cows)

Good idea. If we eat raw food,we will sleep more often, then die after a few days/weeks.

Lodestone should also be used to craft the compass, maybe a lodestone block, and the magnet can be activated/deactivated with electricity. (Signal 1 turns it off, signal 0 turns it on). There should also be an item magnet, in case you lose your spear of something like that. By the way, when are you planning on doing armor?

I absolutely love playing the game and I’m excited about the new upcoming features. Werewolves rock BTW. The one feature I’d like to see (even before multiplayer) is more dangerous monsters, especially in deep cave networks. Imps, daemons, vampires, dragons, giant spiders, skeleton warriors, lava elementals, orcs, goblin suicide bombers, lichens that eat the face, just to throw a few ideas out there. I’d love dungeons too and some rare elite mobs and perhaps traps. It’s awesome that you post the progress you’re making; keeps me checking daily for the next update. Thx for all your hard work.

One Trackback

  1. […] his game more about surviving and it seems he’s pinning his hopes on, amongst other things, a stamina mechanic that will see you tire as you run, jump & climb and frankly I’m torn on […]
