1.19 Moving Forward

Today I cleared one more big obstacle on the way to getting electrics working, which is converting from blocks in the world to an optimized virtual circuit in the memory. This seems to be working now. Still nothing to show though, I will probably make a video once I get something.

One limitation of the electrics system is that it will only work when it is in the loaded part of the world. When you move too far away, it will get unloaded and stop. Of course when you come back it will restart again. I don’t think there is any way around it that would scale well, especially on the phones. And Minecraft’s redstone has the same limitation.

In the meantime I was also working on some UI changes to reduce clutter on the game screen. Here’s how 1.19 looks now:

Instead of 4 buttons on each side there are 3. And there is a new back button on the top left. All the rare stuff is hidden under … button on the top right. When you click it, you get this:

This gives me a nice way to extend the UI without taking any more precious screen space.

For 1.19 I also want to redo the help system. The fixed bitmaps I was using on Windows Phone don’t work well on Android, where devices have different aspect ratios. And they take up a lot of RAM, increase the download size and loading time.

Could you add a toggle downfall button?

    • Posted November 15, 2012 at 22:10 | Permalink | Reply

You mean to disable falling of sand and gravel? You can switch to static mode for that.

No, I mean weather by ” toggle downfall”. Sorry.

I would love to have a more fine grained set of controls over all the dynamic game elements, such as weather, day/night cycling, animals, and block “physics” (falling blocks). This is a issue that I constantly am dealing with during creative mode.

Well the weather controls and the ability to stop falling blocks are already in the game. Weather would be a very nice feature to be able to change.

I believe Kaalus has already said this in another post. He’s not going to do multiplayer or anything like that in this update or any for a little while, not until he’s perfected some of the details. Although Kaalus, correct if I’m wrong, because I’ve been looking forward to Multliplayer too. (possibly more capabilities than Minecraft, like Bluetooth?)

The changes to the User Interface were always going come and there were many ideas. Including my pause button on the top screen. Taking you to a page at the back with most or all buttons on. and i’m not going to argue how that is done because i am not a programer. As for the circuits does the interaction of area’s restrict the idea of those mine carts or any transport? I understand that there is a memory restriction that means only the area you are in is working at that given time and as you say moving away. restarts different areas. you cant have the whole map working at one time. It’s as simple as what caused the lag due to, too much sporning.

Could the click of a switch start the motion of a transport, and at the same time disable various interactions until you come to a stop. I know how easy it sounds written and how hard it is to put into a programme but frowing out some idea.

If there is going to be a road or railroad etc. contact me I do have a few idea’s of how it could be implemented differently to other games that would not just reduce lag but may eliminate it altogether. The idea will not please some but may have the answer to a limited blocky world game on our phones.

What will we be able to use the electricity for? Buttons to open/close doors, pressure blocks, pistons, mine carts, special traps? I say it should be most or all of the above.

  12. Posted November 16, 2012 at 00:51 | Permalink | Reply

I would most like to have pistons and pressure pads/buttons. I like to make mazes and labyrinths and those would allow me to build more intricate puzzles and challenges within them.

@Kaalus: For the new help system you could install a tutorial for new players that have never played survivalcraft or minecraft before. It could be a walkthrough where it teaches you the basics such as collecting wood, making a crafting table, mining, etc.

    • Posted November 16, 2012 at 04:06 | Permalink | Reply

That would be very cool, but I don’t think it would counteract the time it would take to implement.

  15. Posted November 16, 2012 at 05:25 | Permalink | Reply

@ kaalus, it sounds like the program created by the player with blocks in the world is used to write a code in the game engine, so if the corresponding blocks are loaded the code isn’t either and stops. If this is right, could you theoretically save the code part of the program in a separate file tlset to load only on that world, that way it would he loaded all the time? Just an idea…

If the blocks aren’t loaded then the code isn’t either, my bad

volcanoe zones would mean having some blocks inc lava and basalt being placed into a higher enviroment than they already exist, given islands are generated with an assumption of levevels of materials or blocks. your volcanoe world may place unwanted materials in a world not so disimaler to the one anikin skywalker losts his limbs. ask Kaalus for a volcane world to be added, but it may be a bit hard to survive in though.

Better still (sorry about levels, volcanoe,) make a volcanoe zone, in a mountain area make some copper from malchite and turn into a bucket or two, transport some lava upto those hills and pour the stuff down. (volcanoe area).

By the way biome’s relate to the ecostucture of plants or living things. whilst I see where you were going volcanic enviroments differ to normal enviroments biomes relate more too growing elements that change and adapt to various enviroments. worlds with volcano’s are their own idiom.

Having a fixed sized world map would kill this game for me. Could a time difference script be handy. If electricity is used to charge batteries at a rate of 1 unit per second, then x amount of seconds have passed since the last time the area was accessed hence the item has been charged by that amount.
If electricity is being provided by one area to another, then natural volt drop would occur, Could another block (A transformer) keep the amount of electricity moving from one area to another, before the area providing the electricity is unloaded it registers the amount of energy. This is a git of a problem and I can see it fairly clearly, but you are the expert fella.

I do think many of us see ways we can overcomplicate what is a game. my view is similar to yours in that we don’t need full interaction at all times and there could be actions in the game like being killed can take you to the last place of resting. Taking you to a new area but with a little time adjusting to that next enviroment. Whislt i am not a programer i understand how the world your moving too needs to catch up and simple animation although reduce some realism gives a workable way around traveling large distances on already created areas. saves in those areas may change the whole games structure but may save hours of work trying to adjust the games memory issues.
