Tegra 2 and Kindle Fire

I planned to do Tegra 2 fixes over this weekend. To that end, I had an LG Optimus 2X ordered on eBay last week. Unfortunately, there is a problem. The guy I bought it from seems to be a fraud. He took the money but I have not received the phone, and he ignores my messages. I don’t know whether I should order another one, or wait a bit more :-(

This is the first time I have a problem with eBay, I purchased a lot of other Android phones off it, and everything was fine. Oh well.

In the meantime Survivalcraft is doing very well on Amazon AppStore. As of today the demo is #7 in the rankings. What worries me is plenty of poor reviews. A lot of them mention something being wrong with the controls (you need to tap the screen an inch off the actual location of the button), and that the app displays upside down no matter how you rotate the Kindle tablet. I can imagine this can drive anyone nuts :-)

I don’t have any Kindle at the moment, so I can’t verify it. I will probably get one, but I don’t want to buy all of them, just the problematic one. So I need a bit of your help to find which Kindle has the problems.

If you have access to any of these:

  • Kindle Fire (original),
  • Kindle Fire 2nd gen,
  • Kindle Fire HD 7″,
  • Kindle Fire HD 8.9″

Could you please install the demo, and tell me:

  • Do you need to press the buttons in a different place than they are on the screen?
  • Is the screen orientating properly, or upside down?
  • Which Kindle model do you have?

Even if none of these problems happen on your Kindle, it’s still valuable information – please let me know.

To reply please email candyrufusgames at gmail.com, or add a comment to this post.

Big thanks!

[EDIT] Please don’t be vague when stating your Kindle Fire version. When you just write “it works fine on my Kindle Fire” it is worthless – I know it works fine on most of them. I need to know on which one exactly (from the list above).

If you don’t know which one you have, here’s the specs to help you figure out:

  • Kindle Fire (original): released 15 Nov 2011, 7 inch, 1024×600 screen, 512MB RAM, 1GHz CPU
  • Kindle Fire 2nd gen: released 14 Sep 2012, 7 inch, 1024×600 screen, 1GB RAM, 1.2GHz CPU
  • Kindle Fire HD 7″: released 14 Sep 2012, 7 inch, 1280×800, 1GB RAM, 1.2GHz CPU
  • Kindle Fire HD 8.9″: released 15 oct 2012, 8.9 inch, 1920×1080, 1GB RAM, 1.5GHz CPU

That’s right. Exactly a year ago Survivalcraft hit the Windows Phone marketplace for the first time. I should probably write something about it but I’m so busy working on the electrics :-(

No worries, eBay has tools to get the money back. I’m not worried about it, I’m worried because I can’t work on fixing Tegra 2 today :-(

Don’t worry too much about Tegra 2 – issues, I’d say. Just bought full version after trying demo and I’m absolutely excited to go play. Runs great so far on my Medion P9514 ( Tegra 2 – based ;1280 x 800 , 10 inch).

        Left according review on Googleplay.

No. Everything renders just fine at full settings, no hickups .. Not sure how to pass you a screenshot (yet), but you’ll just have to take my word for it.

Now excuse me. Imma go play this all night(s) long …. :)

Thanks for the info. I think I know what causes this problem, but I want to be sure. Can you lock the screen rotation in the OS to make it stick to one orientation and not flip over?

the kindle has a lock rotation feature, so you should tell them to lock it in the download description, also you should lower the preformance & graphics preset to reduce complaints about lag and increase the stars :-)

On 1st Gen Kindle you DO have to tap slightly away from the button instead of on it.

      Posted November 17, 2012 at 19:54 | Permalink | Reply

      the tap is perfectly placed.

    • Posted November 17, 2012 at 22:13 | Permalink | Reply

That’s very valuable info – can you quantify it a bit more. On which side do you have to tap? By how far? Are you sure you’ve got the 1st gen Kindle, i.e. the one released in 2011?

      • Posted November 17, 2012 at 23:29 | Permalink | Reply

To the left of the button. About half the width the buttons. I hope that helps.

In the device section of the kindle fire there is an about section with details of system, serial and wifi address on the system version line there is an (update your kindle) button. on this kindle its not usable yet as probably already upto date as quite new. could this be key to ironing out any problems with older devices?

I believe that the Kindle model I have is the Kindle Fire 1st gen, and the game works beautifully. If others are having an issue, It’s probably because they haven’t rooted/jailbroken theirs yet. I have yet to have an issue with the screen rotation, but that is probably because I don’t hang upsidedown when playing. I typically play it with whatever orientation it happens to be. When I check the info, it says I have a galaxy Nexus, but that is contradicted by the giant indent of “KINDLE”. I am wondering, because there is a way to root the original kindle and put on an Android Greyscale interface, would you be able to play it on it? I don’t want a reply unless you actually know exactly what you are talking about, or if you just tried to do it. Thank you! And now for a randomly generated sentence made by my “guessnextword” app. The starting word is “My”. My friend who is the sender by reply with a few days and then I have to do not sure you have been a lot more information contained herein including any attachments may contain privileged information that I will have to be able to do not be a great weekend so I will not be a few days and the first thing to the sender immediately and the first day and the intended recipient.

So you have no problems with a rooted kindle which confirms that survivalcraft is at least stable under your mod of choice, problem is that the majority of kindle owners don’t root for obvious reasons and we need to help out by making the game compatible with the original os. But with your rooted kindle, you can help out by trying popular mods for compatibility if you can.

On my first Gen Kindle Fire the screen orientation is fine but the controls are a little weird. On the Move control if you press past the left half of the M the control does not work. On the Look button if you press to the right of the second O the control does not work.

I own the Kindle Fire Original and I see the problem with the right hand buttons hotspots. It is about an inch to the left of the buttons (all four). This is the full version of the game, not the demo, installed today (in case it matters).

Thanks for the information. This is very useful. I am getting a 1st gen Kindle Fire so hopefully I will be able to fix this issue.

If I did a speculative fix (without being able to test it myself) and sent you an apk, would you be able to install it on your Kindle to verify whether it works?

      • Posted November 21, 2012 at 12:33 | Permalink | Reply

Yes. As long as ‘allow installation of applications from unknown sources’ is set to yes in settings.
