1.29 work

I am still working on 1.29.

It will be a major release, but it’s still early days. Have a look at the image below:

Nothing special?

In the unlikely case you recall the addition of stair corners a year or so ago, you might figure something’s fishy on the picture.

There is an outside stairs corner there. As you know, the game currently does not support them, and for a very good reason. The stairs can be rotated, placed upside down and put in an inside corner state. This takes up all 4 bits of extra data space associated with the block. I would need an extra bit to add outside corners.

To get extra bits, I need to make all blocks 32 bit instead of 16. This has been long talked about, and pretty much every new feature I added to the game was more or less crippled by only 4 bits of data. Think: why can’t you place logic gates on the floor/ceiling? Why can’t you paint stairs or slabs? Why can’t you have more LED colors? And many others.

So the news is I am making blocks 32 bit for the next release. And going back over all existing features to update them to take advantage of it. Stairs already work, as you can see above.

When I’m finished with this tedium, I have plans for a new grand feature that will need every single one of these new bits. It has been long postponed, because the bits were not there. Now is the time. I never talked about it, so you have no idea what it is. Still, I think you’ll love it — if I can only pull it off :-)

Btw. if anyone guesses what I have in mind I am going to start believing in dowsing and fairies.

    hi kallus i was thinking that stairs can be used to build many stuff but it looks crapy when brick building is covered i some colour and stair parts are “stock” red.
    maybe in 1.29 you could make it possible to paint stairs so we can make our buildings in diffrent colours.

      I’d highly doubt that he says it has to do with the new bits so it must have to do wi either newer block physics or coloring of different sorts. Heck he might even add sloped blocks.

    I can think of a few things it could be… More realistic water physics, 32 bit support for ADCs and other digital circuits, pistons, multiplayer (jk) ;)

      Actually you would be able to cover all six sides with different colours. This will change the creative inventory though. How would that work? You cannot have millions of blocks to choose from. You’ll have to paint in creative. This will be a shlep, but it will be acceptable for me. It would make SC better than ever. Now we only need multiplayer.

          Maybe you can create a block copier in creative, to copy a specific block into your user inventory to make building easier with this in mind. Using this method will clean up the cumbersome and huge choice of blocks and clothes etc. The inventory is getting too big because of this.

    This will be a big update. At last logs will also be rotatable, maybe also other such blocks and items, just like the signs. Think of the possibilities: upside down benches, grass, etc. But I suppose this was possible with 16 bit already, but not in all directions. This also means that it was not necessary to create upside down signs at all. There are 6 directions a block can be in, unless you allow for tilting, which might come way in the future.

    Please allow all directions for most if not all blocks. It would be a game changer.

    What if we had this idea Kaalus:

    If the mining progress on a block stayed at the progress when you stop mining it. Like in terraria. Where u can mine it and stop and be able to come back to it and finish it.

    It won’t just serve just that purpose either. By doing so we could make cracked bricks like the bricks in minecraft. Just by placing the block and mining it a little bit.

    It seems realistic. Because in real life you can’t just hack at something and for it to go back to its original state. It leaves a crack in the object.

          I actually didn’t think about that but the solution:

          To break the block fully OR add a hammer into the game to repair the damaged block. Which could technically add into another effect where animals charging you can damage blocks

    Some blocks already have animation, like torches, but what about 3D (vector) animation? This could also be great. You can bring in better smoke, maybe even have a fire or chimney with smoke, also for guns, or moving leaves and grass.

    Now I’m just guessing.

          I think I’ve said this, but how about a rudder block? You could build a ship from a floating material, (make sure it’s in the water), and attach a rudder to the back. Then add sails and connect the rudder with wires to a steering wheel, which would be turned to control the rudder, obviously. Then you could attach string to the sails to control them and voila! All we’d need is cannons…:-)

    More Paintable Blocks? More Colors for Paints? Fishing Pole? More Generated Structure? Human “Mobs” (Both Npc and Enemies)? Taming? Pistons? More Glass-releated Blocks? More Ores?
    I’ve absolutely no idea about the New Feature, I’ve tried to guess…

    However, the Stair Corner is an interesting addition… And Is good to know that all blocks now uses all the 32 Bits, wich Means, more variations of blocks…

    Another guess: you already have vector graphics on animals, why not on some blocks well? With this we can have angles like with roof tiles. I know it is a blocky game, but we can think outside the box. You already have done this with the animals. With minecraft everything is blocky, even the animals. Why not use the same idea as with the animals on blocks and characters? Why do I need to have a square head when a lion had a round one? With this feature we can have ball shaped items, or triangles, 30 degree or 60 degree angles. We can halve curves or quarter curves. It would be huge and it would set SC appart from any other crafting game out there. It would even be worth more to me than multiplayer.

    A block of stone would have the option to be crafted into different shapes. Will 32 bits be enough though for all my ideas? Well maybe go 64 bit? just dreaming a bit.

    I’ve also noticed something else in the Picture…

    The Slab and Stairs havd always a mirrored/rotated Texture compared to their respective block (An Example? Just put a wood plank close to a “Full” Plank Block, you can See that the texture doesn’t match to each other)
    In this Pic, I see that all the Brick Stairs Texture are Fully plain… And the Textures match perfectly to each Other…

        ? What could it be….. While I am guessing can you please consider adding something simple for me…. Being that gravity is nothing more than a variable like boiancy and velocity can you add a creative mode setting for gravity? This would let me do so many things for adventure maps…. Moon landing remake….. Space shuttle….. A bridge with walls one block high that you can’t climb over due to excessive gravity….. Please add a setting for this….

      Multiplayer would require a server powerful enough to keep every player synced, as well as good Internet or LAN connection by each of the clients. I believe that it would be in the interest of all clients then to also have very fast devices (as the client does in-game rendering, not the server), but I doubt it requires more bits. But definitely requires a very long time to implement.

          Still would require (or rather would be optimized with) a fair amount of processing power in terms of the devices used in order for fast rendering, as well as that Wifi connection to be good. And regardless of the multiplayer type, you’re still going to require a host server.

          On WiFi the initiating device becomes the server. That is how it is done with MCPE, Zycraft and Explore. Even older devices can handle it in those games.

    This would be amazing for creative types like myself. I have been waiting for features like this for longer than I can remember and even posted a colour chart option on the forum. I can finally stop bugging you by asking for them when ever I post. Hope this works out and I’m thinking there could be different colour coloured types of wooden blocks & stairs amazing. Not only that there could be different colours on most blocks. Great job with the corner stairs have wanted that for ages. This is everything I need to get back in to the game. Great job

        I think he means things like computer or TV screens on which you can play videos, or maybe key pads and bigger memory. It would also be nice to have binary adders, multipliers and dividers, because it is a bit complicated to build it all. We could even get a CPU with functions that run from a memory with a program, with very basic functions like LD, LDIR, CP, etc. or maybe basic.

    I can not wait but will it be player customization like skin color, hair, male/female characters ala those options? Pets? NPC or Village like creatures? Spawnable buildings ala villages? Nevertheless yay for more options and I am thankful for adding that star ability. No more the usage of blocks when making a turn like that

    kaalus, i have an idea. add a rpg element! since youll be stranded in an island at first, it makes sense that you wouldnt know anything about the wilderness and building stuff. so as you survive and progress in game you would gain more “experience” and youll be tougher as time goes by. youll level up and increase your skills like breathing longer under water, surviving longer in cold weather, higher hitpoints, stronger attacks, more crafting options, and more! this is just my idea hope you consider. :)

    Extra bits… Is it painted stairs/slabs? Because way back when you released painted planks you mentioned that you couldn’t render painted stairs or planks due to mechanical limitations of the game, but maybe I’m a bit too hopeful…

    Nice to see you’re back!

    I think the new addition is gonna be carts/rails.

    Also, can you make tack removable, and add crops to hit your horse with when they’re being stubborn? (The tiny whips that you hit the horse on the shoulder with, not like, plants or anything) It kinda bothers me that you’re rewarding your horse for bad behavior.

    Also, horse shoes could increase your horses overall speed over certain surfaces.

    The text on the start screen has been updated to 1.28. Yay! 32 bit blocks will be awesome, but will it slow down the game on older devices? Like my old iPod Touch 4. Could we also have a higher visibility notch as my frame rate on full visibility range on my new tablet rarely drops below 20 and tends to be around 32-33 area, often reaching 40. Maybe an increase to 296? The 256 says 2gb of ram and a fast device recommended, but I’ve got 3 so it should be able to handle sqrt (3÷2) times as many blocks view range. This works out at 314 blocks. A few very new devices have 4gb of ram…

    How about adding a new block….. I don’t know what it would be called but this is how it would work….. It would be a dispenser type block…. But rather than dispensing an item it dispenses a block…. ? Probably not practical…..

          Maybe they could also destroy blocks (only certain blocks, it would just be an exploit if it could break blocks that people can’t break by hand). That way, not only could you close castle doors, you could open them as well.

    Perhaps Kaalus is adding seasons? That would have to include certain blocks changing color. Maybe discrete storms that affect only certain parts of worlds and pass over. That would have to require quite a bit of data. Here’s a thought… what if Kaalus is adding more player related animations (sneak mode, sleeping, climbing, etc.) and this has something to do with the smaller player model. That would require much more data to add.

      All Android systems can handle 32 bit. It is only the newer phones that have 64 bit. Speed might be the only concern.

    Lety’s make a list of possible changes mentioned above:

    1. Rotatable and customizable blocks (including multi colours etc.).
    2. Different Biomes – maybe, but not on current maps unless on unexplored areas.
    3. Multiplayer – we may dream.
    4. Improved physics like waving leaves and maybe other block animations – we have them already – like torches. The current animations (appart from animals and water – best example of what is possible with vector graphics inside a block) are bitmap. If 3d is used, you can have great smoke etc. see 6.
    5. Rail transport. I do not think this will come now though although this would be great. Or maybe some other transport.
    6. Vector graphics in blocks – maybe too soon for this.
    7. More colours and textures – the colours will be an obvious addition.
    8. Pistons – This can make sense, but I am not sure if this would be regarded as a major change, then dispensers was also a major change.
    9. Ships – I think it is unlikely.
    10. Better or improved electronics. Probably to follow soon, yet I am not sure if it would be regarded as a major change.

    With number 7 I believe Kaalus will need to implement a block picker or copier so that you can select a block that you have painted to become part of your user inventory. This will streamline the inventory list for everything, including clothing and even fireworks, also opening up the diversity of possible blocks to be had. This would be a major change.

    On number 4, just think what you can do if the same animation is used on sand as with water. Your dunes wil become smooth and sand will flow into holes. You can even use this technique on dirt as well by letting it erode over time, making mountains smooth. Why not? This would set appart SC from any other game out there. Do we really have to stay with blocky? But this would render old maps using sand as it is, useless. Just give an option to disable this.

    What else could it be apart from this? The other options mentioned are less likely and some does not belong to SC.

    So, Kaalus, are we even close or do we need to guess more? Maybe give us a clue or maybe you are introducing dowsing and fairies? I have a feeling we are stilling missing it.

    Have you maybe left a clue with the word “dowsing?” It has to do with underground water and mineral searching using divination. Maybe you are bringing pipes or some other form of mining to us. This could include minecarts or something. Maybe new minerals. Looks like I have too much time on my hands but I like the guessing game…

        There is already a bit for that with ladders. It could just be enabled for vines. I’ve never really seen the need for this in SC, athough I can see it work in some adventures.

    Does anyone remember me? I’m sure MTB adventures/RCs to the limit does! SilverSpark? Ring a bell anyone? Well that’s me! And Kaalus, not to sound like a total piece of sh*t, but I’ve realized since uploading is gone, you’ve lost players! 😵 yes, my friends and I would play it all the time, we would download worlds and screw around and blow up the nasty s3x worlds, but that was when we couldn’t upload and by the time I was about to teach them how, uploading was gone! 😐 They quit playing, deleted it, and found new games. And the people who would make the mansions and cities, well that was probably what they did after school, possibly adults who played, a long day after work, a huge test etc. So, please reconsider uploading. My cousins and I were pretty big on there and we could talk sense into some people too. If you could have a category thing where you could rate it, it might help with younger children having s3x worlds etc. And, please don’t pick a fight with me MTB! I don’t want to fight anymore! So Kaalus, please consider readding uploading!

    I have 3 ideas on what it might be, if it’s a block of some sort than it could be some kind of piston like in minecraft that can push other blocks or maybe a motor of some sort that could rotate objects and allow players to make stuff like moving vehicles but since he defined it as a “Featue” it’s probably not a block but then again could have something to do with blocks… Or could it be something bigger like multiplayer?

    Dowsing and Fairies, the first thing that comes to minds is The Legend of Zelda, more specifically Skyward Sword with that annoying Dowsing system it forced you to use at the beginning of the game, which allowed you to (obviously) find materials to upgrade items with, after upgrading the Master Sword, which was revealed to be inhabited by a mystical being called Fi… You’re adding enchantments, or I’m just reading too far into meaningless words. I hope it’s the first one; it will add much more variety to the weapons.

        Oh… Now I understand… I’ve reread all the comments containing the word ‘dowsing’ in them, as well as the post, and you are somehow right! Not right with the time I said it was uploaded; just like you I’ve said that the comment could be sent then and be delievered in 2018. But Kaalus mentioned that fairies and dowsing in the main post, so that was why everyone was talking about it. So there might be no WP error. You are right; it was my fault for not reading it all. At least good that I had problems with commenting in the last post from July 2017, so I couldn’t spread this wrong information very much.
