This is what I am working on

I have finally got to a point where I think the big thing in 2.1 will work, so here’s what it is.

Is it multiplayer?

It isn’t. But it also is! That’s what I am talking about:

Splitscreen1.jpg

In the photo above, my kids are testing split screen in Challenging mode, trying to grab some wood before the night comes.

Up to 4 people can play:

Splitscreen2.jpg

All of the above screenshots were taken on a PC. One person plays with a mouse, the rest uses gamepads.

What about phones and tablets? Well, it’s more difficult. You can mirror the device’s screen on a TV and use gamepads to play (I am adding gamepad support in 2.1).

But below is an experimental setup that might just work on 10″ tablets without TVs or pads:

Splitscreen4.jpg

The players use opposite sides of the tablet.

I don’t have much hopes this is very comfortable for any length of time, and probably it’s a dud, but the possibility is there.

Today I quickly hacked the terrain generator so that it generates a small island surrounded by ocean only. I played with my kids for a couple of hours in Challenging using 3-way splitscreen, trying to survive on the island. There was no pumpkins, and the only cows were in a cold part of the island, where we could not get without proper clothes. My son was hunting birds with a stone spear to keep us alive (three people need a lot of birds not to starve), my daughter was improving our little house on top of a tree, while I was preparing a farm near the water (we had no bucket yet). It was a blast! Real fun.

During the last month I refactored the code out of all recognition, and it now supports UI that is upside down (funky!) and most importantly having multiple players in the same world.

Now I need to dispel any misunderstandings. This is not multiplayer – all players must play on the same computer/phone/tablet. But yes, you can have many players.

Also, it is badly unfinished still. Plenty of details are wrong. For example if one player goes to sleep, time speeds up about 10x and everyone else is pretty much screwed :-)

Anyway, I hope you get the idea, and I must tell you after playing with my kids, I’ve not had so much fun with a game for a long time! If you have siblings or friends I think you’ll like it too.

[EDIT]

I was reading your comments, and I think you guys are amazing. I posted a couple of puny screenshots and you are already finding bugs! Someone noticed that the temperature meter is invisible for some players in the screenshots – so well spotted! I didn’t notice it. It took me 5 minutes to figure out why they are invisible – if only everything was so simple. It’s not a bug in this case – the players are in a cold area and the bars are flashing – that’s why some of them are invisible in the screenshots :-) But thanks anyway, the fact that you are looking so closely made my day.

I would like it to be compatible with USB gamepads on Android, if you ask how I connect a usb to a tablet / cell phone, you have to use an adapter called OTG (google it)

        • Posted February 9, 2017 at 00:04 | Permalink

USB OTG (on the Go) it has a Usb port on one side and a (input that connects to your device let it be lightning or micro) connector of the other. Can usually be found for 5$

          Got mine from office depot.

If I’m correct any games that will connect to your device will work on any game. Moga pro power is good for Android and steel stratus XL is good for Windows 10. Idk about IOS tho.

I would like it to be compatible with USB gamepads, since here in Chile (the country where I live) the Bluetooth controls like the Ipega are very expensive, so I prefer to buy a cheap USB computer gamepad (usually cost 10-20 dollars) and then I connect it to my cell phone via USB OTG

Mgh! Mgh! I can’t breathe! Kaalus, you have me dumbfounded. You are a genius. This means you won’t have to get SC2 on two devices, though I agree it would be kind of uncomfortable. Can’t wait till me and my brother play PVP against eachother. Also, this is now an environmental game like Eco if it’s a small island. Only a little less drastic. Can’t wait! I…*drops dead*

I want an answer, to leave the doubts :)

    • Posted February 8, 2017 at 23:59 | Permalink | Reply

If I’m correct the USB OTG will not work.

I mentioned this in a later post.

Most controllers will require an external app to work.

      Heres a list.

IOS: idk what type of gamepads work with ios.

      Android:
      Most bluetooth controllers will work.
      – I use a moga pro power(I found mine @best buy) but have to download an external app called ‘pivot’ to connect.

      – any steelstratus controllers.
      – any moga contr..
      – or look up on Google ‘*device* (IOS/android) bluetooth controllers’

      Windows 10

Has to be a controller that will either have a cord with usb or bluetooth enabled.

      – any Xbox controllers with usb cords will work. (but I Ill advice you not to go down this route bc I’ve have two controllers R2 button break on me.) sensitivity is good but controller isn’t durable.

      – Most bluetooth enabled controllers will work.

I use a Steel stratus XL (which requires external app to connect. Provided on steel stratus’s website.) it’s bluetooth enabled but has a weird trigger sensitivity *which I think has to do with the STSTXL app bc it allows you to change trigger sensitivity.)

      – also google is a humans best friend. Just look up ‘Windows 10 (computer type) controllers’ most of them will show best buy or Amazon. I got my steel from best buy also.

Sorry if there is any confusion

Lan (stands for Local Access Network)

But in this case, if I’m correct, they won’t need a LAN (or same internet access) to play together.

Just an old feature from the early days of games to where people could play the same game on one game system. Which doesn’t require internet which is split screen.

      • Posted February 8, 2017 at 22:26 | Permalink | Reply

I do not think that you say; It’s more, I think it would make it more realistic. Although if it is a bit likened to the minecraft experience method, but that does not mean that it is a bad idea, however, I respect your opinion.

But, there is something ugly in chalenging, there is nothing that prevents us from dying, that is to say we earn more to die than looking for food

      • Posted February 9, 2017 at 21:28 | Permalink | Reply

I don’t think that’s unrealistic. When you do an exercise you get more stronger, same to SC, I think. In this case, should be a level where the player could be stronger and faster with time.

I think in future versions of the game should have a player level, like 0 to 30 or 0 to 100 and in each level the player could improve his skills like strength, stamina, speed and so forth. For example, by digging the player can improve his strength and dig faster when he reach a specific level.

    • Posted February 8, 2017 at 23:51 | Permalink | Reply

Then after posting this comment people will instantly say that’s unrealistic.

But in my opinion I like the idea. Gives the idea of your character getting stronger which is realistic.

Hey kaalus if you do add his idea in. Watch 7 days to die videos and see how @FunPimps did their xp based level system.

Great idea. IKaalus, maybe you chose a small island to overcome the respawning problem of animals. How will you manage the issue of animals disappearing when you leave an area, but another player is there. Maybe you have now reworked the animal system completely. Maybe animals no longer will disappear? I’ll get a gamepad though and try it out. I have two boys.

We can now see your two children. If I’m right, you have a boy and a girl according to the photo but also because you always talk about your son singular. They look great!

I’ll still wait for the LAN multiplayer for hopefully 2.2 and hopefully before the end of the year. I see the incentive of version 2 is paying off. Maybe you remember that I mailed you quite a while ago about it.

Because that introduces whole bunch of other problems you don’t have to deal with when playing on single machine. You would have to write whole network communication protocol, deal with synchronization of server and clients and a lot of other issues that could take months to implement. This feature is great, however. The game will be practically prepared for multiple players, so it will be indeed only a matter of implementing network communication, which will of course still take time, but you will get playable split screen in the mean time. Plus how many block building games with split screen you know? This is going to be huge advantage for some people.

Here is some cheap advertising in game link for Elswyr EPIC X6 keeps getting deleted due to size so it’s hard to find on the community content always having its rating reset. Rather disappointing but I’m not pay $15 a month for the privilege ;)

I’ve moved it to a private server so your Drobpox account will not get blocked. It’s a truly epic world. Actually there’s a few copies of it in the CC, I’m not sure I moved the one you uploaded. It’s the one near the top of the list currently.

If you add a local WiFi multiplayer, it would be phenomenal. But I understand that costs a lot,
That doesn’t make itself just for wanting it.
But I think it’d be better than splitted screen

Bugs I found in Survivalcraft 2 so far:

    1. When playing in a world, the camera occasionally spazzes out to a random direction slightly. This is not only annoying but also frustrating especially while you are in cruel mode, when mining, and while you are in combat. This can also cause you to have some of your ranged attacks to miss as if in 1.29 and earlier, it would hit because those versions do not have the spazzing bug. This bug can be serious. Please fix it soon!

    2. When you leave an area where there is a massive wildfire, some of the fire will float in air permanently burning an air block and repeats endlessly.

    3. On some of the older 64-bit iOS devices like the iPhone 6, iPad Mini 2, and iPhone 5S, some of the entities with 2D models contain an outline that is not well erased. Please fix this graphical bug by updating the blocks texture for 2.1. Again, you can fix this graphical bug for 2.1.

    4. When your X-Coordinates and/or Y-Coordinates are less than 1, you clip through the terrain and you go below bedrock, thus, you fall out of the world. This Bug also affects the player placing blocks. Note: This bug does not affect large animals such as Bears, Orcas, Beluga Whales, and Rhinos. This bug has been present since 1.22 (and possibly 1.21). Please fix this bug, which has been present for a long time, for 2.1. Also, when your X-Coordinates and/or Y-Coordinates are close to 0, there is a bug in which water blocks do not move unless if you mess with it.

    5. This bug has probably also been around for a long time, but rare. This bug is that you may find floating terrain that has not been created by the player. And in rare cases, there may even be some floating trees. Please fix this for 2.1 by improving terrain generation.

    6. When you are in the water and completely wet, the squelching sounds still play. Squelching sounds are not supposed to play while you are in the water. They are only supposed to play when you are on land. This bug has been present since 1.27.

    7. When you throw spears at the upper part of a target and wood, they do not stick. This can be frustrating when you are practicing your spear throwing. Also, when you throw bricks at birds, even at very close range, The brick will travel too slow and not deal any damage. Please fix this bug by speeding up the spears and bricks a little bit.

    8. When you are killed by a Black Bull, the cause of death says “Killed by a”. It is supposed to say “Killed by a Black Bull”. I also recommend that if you are killed by a bull or cow, it should say the type of bull/cow on cause of death screen. Black Cow: “Killed by a Black Cow”; Black Bull: “Killed by a Black Bull”; White Bull: “Killed by a White Bull”; Brown Cow: “Killed by a Brown Cow”; Brown Bull: “Killed by a Brown Bull”. Please fix the typo on the cause of death when you are killed by a black bull. Also, I recommend that when you are killed by a cow or a bull, it should display the type of cow or bull.

Kaalus, please fix those bugs for either another bugfix update for 2.0 or for the upcoming 2.1 update. Thank you for reading.

    • Posted February 9, 2017 at 17:36 | Permalink | Reply

Generally you can only use android tablets with otg usb ports to use usb lan adapters. You can technically use Android phones with otg as well, but why? Why do you want to go to a cable LAN system. For the software it is the same whether you use LAN or WLAN. WLAN is the same as LAN, just wireless (W) LAN.

I think you meant you want WLAN (local), but not WAN (Wide Area Network) which is Internet.

Bluetooth is much too slow and limited to use for multiplayer. It is barely fast enough for good audio. Plus, it doesn’t have the proper connectivity for multiple sources talking at once. Almost any tablet or phone can be used as a wifi hotspot. That’s so much better than bluetooth!

I have an unlocked phone and it lets me create a hotspot without data. A small pocket router is also a good option.

You say a expensive pocket router?
In my country all is expensive, (Chile)

        • Posted February 11, 2017 at 05:21 | Permalink

If you want a hotspot without using any data, do the following:

You enable hotspot with data, so you will at least need to be data capable. Then you go to settings (Android) data usage and enable ‘set mobile limit.” Now you need to bring down both bars, the warning as well as the limiter to 0. Android only lets you limit to a minimum of 70M,but if you click on the 70,you can edit it and make it 0. If you have already used more than 70,you can skip this.

Now you can have a hotspot that use 0 data without using a router.

Music or video need a lot more data than communicating between games, assuming the system is well designed which, knowing SC, it would be.

Kaalus, as for one player sleeping and time speeds up for everyone else, I have a possible solution.
When one player goes to sleep it starts a timer on their screen counting down to sunrise.
When it’s sunrise they wake up.

    • tjsurvivalcraft
      Posted February 10, 2017 at 15:56 | Permalink | Reply

How about a timer that ticks down till sunrise, UNLESS all the players find a shelter and sleep, then it would speed up to the normal sleep time. And it could give a notification to all players saying “Bob has fallen asleep, find shelter and sleep to speed up the sleeping process.” Or something like that

Don’t forget to fix the bug that keeps (non-placed) leaves far from wood from decaying. I don’t think that’s worked correctly in quite a while.

Are you sure the leaves itself don’t have a wood block within it ? I’ve this this happen a few times myself after taking down entire trees, but after closer inspection I noticed one or two wood blocks surrounded by the leaves I didn’t notice at first.
If it were single leaf blocks, well that’s a different story all together.

Kaalus, could you please address the problem where the Memory Bank (and adjustable delay, and truth table) is ERASED if it’s ‘ popped’ off by a piston? Banks can be used as keys in adventure maps and pistons can pop them back at the character, if it’s the wrong one (no tools). But then the bank become useless since it gets erased.

    Hello Creator or Moderator,

I know this is a huge request. My question is asking about multiplayer via wifi, the question is how close are we to seeing this in survival craft. Personally I think it out ranks mind craft in every way other then a 2 player via wifi modem at home.

If you’ve heard of an estimated time frame on this coming out could you please let me know.

I freaking hate Roblox and my daughters tired of Minecraft so I’m about to go nuts if I don’t find a new god/ survival game we can play together I’m going to go crazy. We both love survival craft 2 and 1. Just hopeing and waiting for the two player wifi update. We just like building together and playing together in the same world.

Thank you for all hard work. It really is Appreciated and valued.
