Bogged down

A few days ago I had a brainwave and started working on a very promising idea for 2.1. Unfortunately it seems the amount of work to get it done is absolutely massive. I am currently bogged down, knee deep in classes, almost rewriting entire game from scratch. Maybe it’s an exaggeration, but I am touching almost every bit of code there is. The amount of bugs I am unwittingly introducing must be staggering.

The problems are caused by some assumptions I hardcoded into the game from day one (5 years ago), so they are deeply entrenched and very hard to root out now.

As much as I would love to, I can’t tell you what the thing is until I am sure it will work. At the moment it seems lightyears away! I hope I am wrong here. At least yesterday the game started compiling again, but lots of things are broken.

If I manage to complete it, it will be grand. If I fail, I’ll have to revert and go back to what I was doing at the start of the week, which was not bad in itself and much easier :-)

Glad you reserved the second post for me to advertise SCTB on… :D

Most of you have probably heard about SCTB by now, some of you may have even used the pre-beta program I made to test all the features on. All of you wanted it to be in a 3D editor, which of course has always been the plan. That was already happening but the development got slow and crumbled. Since then I’ve rebooted the project and just wrote on the blog about it!

Kaalus, I’m really happy that 2.1 will be a survival update, so I guess it’s a great time for you to consider some of my suggestions. There are some things that I really want to be added to the game since 1.26:

Saddle bags: Probably the thing I want the most right now, I always wanted to make a “World exploration” world, in wich I will travel the world with my horse/camel and would camp during the night, however, this proves to be hard with limited inventory, since long-term homeless exploration needs clothing, food, resources and tools, and it’s nearly impossible to carry all these by yourself, so adding the possibilty for mounts to carry items will make long travels possible and more viable.

Tents: Alongside with Saddle bags, tents or some kind of craftable shelter will also be nescessary, they would provide protection from mobs, would provide insulation, and would make it possible for you to sleep inside them. Kaalus could also add diferrent kinds of tents, such as tents made from leaves, canvas and leather, wich would have different perks:
Leaves: Easy to craft, but provide weak insulation and can be easily destroyed.
Canvas: Good insulation and slightly better protection
Leather: Medium insulation, but the smell will scare predators away.

Cooking on campfires: This is not only realistic and fun, but also very simple to add, Campfires should allow players to cook food on a slower rate. With the other additions above, this will make a nice camping mix.

Bigger/More complex boats: I always liked to make sea adventure using a boat, however, with the new proper water transparency and cold, they are much harder to be done, so adding bigger boats that are more resilient to damage and have a small place for you to sleep and add 2-3 blocks such as a chest, crafting table or wicker lamp would be nice.

Fire pits: A more permanent and durable campfire with stones surrounding it, will last longer and provide more heat.

Please Kaalus, consider adding at least one of the things listed above, they are simple and will make gameplay more dynamic :)

      • Posted January 15, 2017 at 05:08 | Permalink | Reply

I think what was meant was those materials would be used as part of the crafting.

    • Posted January 18, 2017 at 07:00 | Permalink | Reply

I often find myself being disheartened to play survival mode even when I’m in the mood to do so due to the fact that I’m constantly losing my temporary shelter/crafting table/furnace/chests etc and end up just building a new one rather than getting torn apart wandering aimlessly around at night looking for something I’m likely never to find. The limited inventory has always been that restricting factor that in a board less world literally makes it limited in survival mode.

Your ideas, which I’ve seen suggested elsewhere before are the definition of what needs to be added to survivalcraft to make it a realistic survival game which is pretty much the reason everyone plays survivalcraft for the realistic factor.

So your trapped on a desert island and you need to cook some food you caught or boil some water, let’s build a stone furnace….. Or maybe cook on an open fire? Which one seems more realistic?

Cooking on open fires, and tents /swags are 2 things that define survival in real life for any would be adventurer or outdoors type person so adding them to a realistic survival game makes perfect sense.

Saddle bags would solve my problem with survival mode instantly. Opening up a whole other path of game play for survivalist and creative peeps alike. Most of the fun with a randomly generated world with no boarders is exploration no? I just want to see what’s over that next hill and not have to go back :)

Good luck on your endeavours Kaalus. You tread where other programmers fear and it means a great deal to us that you should tackle a difficult task rather than take the easy route. If I may add one suggestion, when you crouch you can pass through spaces one block high.

    • Posted January 15, 2017 at 00:09 | Permalink | Reply

That’s a great idea. Basically crawling in tight spaces. I second that. Many times a 1×1 block is a window or trap door. Would be nice to be able to climb in, assuming the ground outside was level with the opening. How about using vines to climb up into trees or up rock faces?

Now that we have gunpowder and muskets, maybe craft a weapon that can lunch small grenades far enough to use for animal control (taking out packs of wolves, lions, and herd animals). We already have small craftable explosives – this would just be a launcher. Really enjoying SC2 game so far.

Dying from 8 blocks high (roughly 24 feet) is just silly most Humans can survive 70-80 foot falls and only break some bones in their feet. It should be at least DOUBLED to be realistic… Yeah, and get rid of the wolf weres, so there is so much work ahead.

Bugs I found in Survivalcraft 2 so far:

    1. When playing in a world, the camera occasionally spazzes out to a random direction slightly. This is not only annoying but also frustrating especially while you are in cruel mode, when mining, and while you are in combat. This can also cause you to have some of your ranged attacks to miss as if in 1.29 and earlier, it would hit because those versions do not have the spazzing bug. This bug can be serious. Please fix it soon!

    2. When you leave an area where there is a massive wildfire, some of the fire will float in air permanently burning an air block and repeats endlessly.

    3. On some of the older 64-bit iOS devices like the iPhone 6, iPad Mini 2, and iPhone 5S, some of the entities with 2D models contain an outline that is not well erased. Please fix this graphical bug by updating the blocks texture for 2.1. Again, you can fix this graphical bug for 2.1.

    4. When your X-Coordinates and/or Y-Coordinates are less than 1, you clip through the terrain and you go below bedrock, thus, you fall out of the world. This Bug also affects the player placing blocks. Note: This bug does not affect large animals such as Bears, Orcas, Beluga Whales, and Rhinos. This bug has been present since 1.22 (and possibly 1.21). Please fix this bug, which has been present for a long time, for 2.1. Also, when your X-Coordinates and/or Y-Coordinates are close to 0, there is a bug in which water blocks do not move unless if you mess with it.

    5. This bug has probably also been around for a long time, but rare. This bug is that you may find floating terrain that has not been created by the player. And in rare cases, there may even be some floating trees. Please fix this for 2.1 by improving terrain generation.

    6. When you are in the water and completely wet, the squelching sounds still play. Squelching sounds are not supposed to play while you are in the water. They are only supposed to play when you are on land. This bug has been present since 1.27.

    7. When you throw spears at the upper part of a target and wood, they do not stick. This can be frustrating when you are practicing your spear throwing. Also, when you throw bricks at birds, even at very close range, The brick will travel too slow and not deal any damage. Please fix this bug by speeding up the spears and bricks a little bit.

    8. When you are killed by a Black Bull, the cause of death says “Killed by a”. It is supposed to say “Killed by a Black Bull”. I also recommend that if you are killed by a bull or cow, it should say the type of bull/cow on cause of death screen. Black Cow: “Killed by a Black Cow”; Black Bull: “Killed by a Black Bull”; White Bull: “Killed by a White Bull”; Brown Cow: “Killed by a Brown Cow”; Brown Bull: “Killed by a Brown Bull”. Please fix the typo on the cause of death when you are killed by a black bull. Also, I recommend that when you are killed by a cow or a bull, it should display the type of cow or bull.

Kaalus, please fix those bugs for either another bugfix update for 2.0 or for the upcoming 2.1 update. Thank you for reading.

I’ve experienced the brick bug a couple of times and is quite annoying! And I think that happens with a couple of other animals, but I’m not sure…

The Floating Island isn’t a real bug… It can be reduced but cannot be resolved, floating islands generates when a cave is “generated” in the air close to a mountain or something like That…

Dirt tree bug I’ve seen the most of.
World fall threw glitch is so annoying, Worlds should allow you to Loop around, that would save so much data.
Floating islands are … Ok I guess, (levi-stones).
One Glitch I kind of found is if you hit a wolf in the back of the head with a gravel piece, “rock” (grey wolves more) they seem to die instantly. It doesn’t happen all the time, but 2/10 times is enough to notice in 1.29.
      Thanks for the glitch list.

Hey kaalus!!! This is a must see big report/duplication glitch.

If you place down a furniture and use the hammer on the furniture and simply change the way it’s facing the game will give you 6 more of those items instead of just editing that item. If you could fix this I absolutely hate dupe glitches.

Placed furniture + hammer editing = 6 more furnitures

Plus can you make furnaces, chests and crafting tables editable so we can create our own interactive items.

      Posted January 16, 2017 at 17:47 | Permalink | Reply

Using the hammer MEANS creating a new piece. You’re asking for a change in the basic function of the tool. Perhaps an option in the hammer UI, like we have for changing the name would work…

Yes Chris drake +1. I have previously created the furniture and already have placed it down. It infinitely will duplicate that item when editing it. I already got a video of it I’ll post a link to it shortly.

BTW, I’ve learned some interesting things about furniture but won’t speak to them here. Only on the forum or wiki…

A mod support API would be great! Just a library that would give us functions to manipulate the game:

GetPlayerInventoryItem (by index, as indexed in the project.xml currently)

SetPlayerPos (with a stream time compensation loading screen if the desired position is outside of the currently streamed chunks)
SetPlayerCameraPos (with a stream time compensation loading screen if the desired position is outside of the currently streamed chunks)
SetPlayerInventoryItem (by index, as indexed in the project.xml currently)

GetBlock* (return block type, data, and light from position… postion will be floats not ints)

GetPosFromRaycast(float startX, float startY, float startZ, float endX, float endY, float endZ, float distance) (return pos hit by the ray, and all 0’s if nothing was hit)
GetSurfaceNormalFromRaycast(float startX, float startY, float startZ, float endX, float endY, float endZ, float distance) (return surface normal of face hit by the ray, and all 0’s if nothing was hit) (since we are typically hitting just blocks then this could just be a direction I guess)
GetBlockPosFromRaycast(float startX, float startY, float startZ, float endX, float endY, float endZ, float distance, bool adjacent) (return pos of block hit by the ray, and all 0’s if nothing was hit; if adjacent is true then the block in the direction of the ray will be returned, if it’s false then the block behind the position will be returned)

Also add the ability to highlight blocks in the game, in which blocks (including air) would be highlighted with a box (cube with transparent faces and solid edges).
Only the API will be able to highlight blocks, with a “SetBlockHighlight” or something.
    – SetBlockHighlight(int x, int y, int z, bool toggle, Color color);
I’m pretty sure you already have the code for this since you have the black-edged box thing already that shows which block you’re looking at.

And finally, a graphics interface system would be nice. Just something that would allow us to show text, rectangles, and images on the screen.

With this basic API we could EASILY create an in-game editor and many other useful things!

my game for some reason cant link to my dropbox account and I want to share my months worth of work with you.
my first electric game is called survival jump and is basically a simpler form of doodle jump except without the monsters. it also has my new input system what turns the onscreen buttons into electrical signals instead of having buttons in the game that block your view. you can look around the circuit and all major circuits are labelled so you can see what goes on for the game to run correctly. if you do want the explore break only the limestone blocks as they don’t have any wires or gates on them so you wont break the game.

I have also built minesweeper that follows all standard rules except for automatically clearing blank zones this is also labelled and has a smaller bonus build of an automatic survival door that you can keep open or closed in day light but at night it will automatically close to keep predators out.

      • Posted January 21, 2017 at 17:37 | Permalink | Reply

But Kaalus said that he had a brainwave for a new idea… He already knew about multiplayer for a long time.

    • Posted January 16, 2017 at 12:42 | Permalink | Reply

Well right now, as a cruel mode player, I see multiplayer as a very bad idea. In any other mode besides creative resources would run out. I don’t care if we have 999,999,999 blocks long in the world or 10 times that, hundreds and hundreds of people all mining for germanium just to build a single piston would drain the world.
Also in creative mode, my trapping skill has evolved~ I can now trap a player on ANY mode forever, or at least until some idiot lets them out of the trap… Few little hiccups there, but at least I’m trying to have fun in creative mode now.

      • Posted January 16, 2017 at 13:08 | Permalink | Reply

H i Justin. You are mainly talking of one scenario in MP. There are many. One option is local multiplayer where you only play with you friends and family. With this, your issue is not of concern. Then there are server based maps where usually one or a few has moderator rights and they can choose who or how many to allow in the game. If you have an unlimited game, then this could be a concern, but the map is supposed to be unlimited in size. The server could also limit the amount of players.

In creative the same would apply, but it would great to have teams building things. Furniture would be a bit more complicated.

Then again, anyone can choose not to use multiplayer at all. You can still just play single player if you do not like the idea.

You posted about the ‘prison door’ in another topic. Could you elaborate? How about stopping by the forum or wiki and explain. Let the adventure map makers in on the trick? I’ve been making some other discoveries, like the ‘invisble’ blocks…

        • Posted January 16, 2017 at 19:35 | Permalink

You know the glitch Kaalus talked about with being able to move those “unbreakable” blocks in the very bottom of worlds? They require pistons to move (the piston is a solid block, and the character is 1.5 solid blocks) Well these blocks are still “unbreakable” in creative mode. So basically make a small enough room, or a room with walls big enough they can trap any creative player inside. It doesn’t matter how much lightening the summon, or how many bombs they throw, they are stuck. Only 2 ways I know how to get out, but not going to tell anyone those. I even made a world about them, I called it the Rule. Try trapping yourself~

Oh, that was so NOT the impression I got from the other post. BTW, breaking bedrock is a commonly known ‘secret’.

      • Posted January 16, 2017 at 20:10 | Permalink | Reply

You can get out of a bedrock cage. Even if the size is 1x2x1 you can get out in creative. In survival you have to be lucky enough to start with the right items, but it’s still possible. Most players don’t know how to do this though.

        • Posted January 17, 2017 at 14:00 | Permalink

Yeah that video is old… 12 sand blocks and boat don’t really work anymore. Also I said the biggest error in my trap design is some other player can come along and let someone out. So the prison idea works, basically need a guard to prevent someone form letting out a bad player.

        • Posted January 17, 2017 at 16:07 | Permalink

It’s a lot simpler than that. All you need is a small gunpowder keg and one block. It doesn’t really keep creative players out.

        • Posted January 19, 2017 at 00:57 | Permalink

was designed to keep a creative player trapped inside… Hence with just one piston I and switch and I could free a bad player no problem… but from the inside they are stuck, “forever”.

        • Posted January 19, 2017 at 01:42 | Permalink

Shoot I meant in, creative players can get out of the cage with a small gunpowder and a block. Excuse me.

        • Posted January 21, 2017 at 17:43 | Permalink

You know… there was a minigame that I had once intended to run once kaalus added multiplayer. It included a team of survival players going up against someone in creative mode. Basically the creative move player would join after the survival players got decent gear and items. If the survival players could get the one in creative mode to die, the survival mode team won. If all survival mode players died, the player in creative mode won. It was all based around the fact that you could lure and suffocate someone in creative mode, but this bedrock mechanic has made everything so much easier.

        • Posted January 21, 2017 at 17:44 | Permalink

Would take forever, but I think you could make some sort of lure lead to a crushing bedrock wall.

        • Posted January 21, 2017 at 17:45 | Permalink

I used to imagine that the survival team would use sand or closing trapdoors to suffocate the enemy, but now they can also use bedrock, although that would take quite a while.

        • Posted January 21, 2017 at 17:46 | Permalink

They could also make a bedrock fort to prepare before they let the one in creative mode come online

2.1 will be going to “Survival Theme ” right? Ok here the list to make the “Survival Theme” Perfect!

    1. Fishing Rod : Can take fish, but need to wait. (Need worms or never get fish..) The bait is Worms and bread , (The craft might be 2 sticks, 1 iron, )

2.Breeding Animals : Make animal population more , instead of spawning it everywhere.. The animals always need to be neaby to make them breeding .. The breeding will make one of the animal, come out with a baby animal ( need to take some time after breeding)

    3. Improvement… : Makes tiger, lion , horse and any other animal that Have leather should give some leather when Killed …..
    4. Improvement….: Tigers ,lion , bear , horse, shark, and other “fat” animals should Give some meats when killed…

    5. Generated Structures : Abandoned Cabin, Village, Abandoned Village, Abandoned Mining place, and a secret room around the island (using piston of course!)

    6. One more improvement… : Add ” Search BAR ” in Community Content . Refresh The Community worlds, remove stupid worlds, and Very old World, (Dont remove MgBitlz World pls! And any other s Professional Electricity) And (IMPORTANT) Add categories in community content….Example… If you want to find electricity theme world, You will go to the categories..

    7. Add Meteor… .. When the Meteor fall down to earth, the first thing to hear is sound of the Meteor hits the atmosphere…. might be very Loud.. When the meteor hits The ground, the first thing to see is Light will fulling your screen, The sound will be like a television is broken, (I dont know the name of the sound..) And Your screen will shaking.. After the impact

    8. The Meteorite might has some iron… And any other that came from space… ( i’m not an astrofizik..)

That’s all… And I wish Giraffe can eat leaves at the tree… Wow i think it will looks beautiful =)

Thank you Kaaluz, Hope you can add this.. But if can’t i dont care so much… Love the SurvivalCraft 2 but are the piston Can pull Dispenser yet? I just update it.. Looks the same but nvm

      1. yes that would help survival players.
      2. Yes, random spawns would make cruel mode easier.
      3. Yeah all animals need to drop something, I treat lions and tigers like zombies that just attack and give nothing
      4. now you’re asking for too much…
      5. Um, why have abandoned stuff if we get NPCs? Also wouldn’t it take more work/skill to fix up something broken then it would to build new?
      6. Not really helpful to cruel players sort of any level players …
      7. No, just no…
      8. You want iron to rain from heaven? I’d be begging for Germanium! Need more then a stack full just for one pisston!!! Skip Iron it’s almost worthless now!

I have come to a conclusion as to what this bog down might mean. One key problem Kaalus has, is that everything that can contains data, like chests, crafting tables, memory chips, logic tables, dispensers, etc., is fixed to a specific location in the data file. For this reason it is not possible to move these items with pistons. It would be better to rather give these items ID numbers. There are exceptions though, like delay gates. They have data, yet they can be moved with pistons.

I think it is a big possibility that he is trying to do this. This could help us to move chests and dispensers. This will make a big difference. You’ll also be able to move memory chips with pistons, which will open up many options as well, especially in adventure maps.

Add to this maybe he’ll enable dispensers to also receive items like chests can and then you can transport items over great distances.
This feature is also needed for multiplayer, because every player is like a walking chest. You carry an inventory, clothes and a lot of other information.

Kaalus am I getting warm? I know this might not be such an involved issue as you described, but it is something that is woven into a lot of things, but I might be very wrong. If this is not the issue, maybe you could address this at some stage.

    • Posted January 16, 2017 at 18:06 | Permalink | Reply

So with this in mind, a chest is literally bogged down in mud and cannot be moved.

    Feature Request:
In creative mode, add a save state mode that allows you to revert. Kind of like how adventure mode allows your to reset the adventure, but for craft mode. I hate having to switch modes over and over to test out things I’ve built… and some times things just don’t go the way I hoped when crafting, especially with fire, laval, and explosives.

If you don’t want that, here is a few reasons u should.
    1. Many loyal fans left ur game be cuz of loneliness. Add multiplayer = they come back
    2. It can teach younger children to cooperate.
    3. Have fun.

    How it works.
    Type same world name
    type same seed.
[u add] type same multiplayer code so the app knows to link the players together.

The NPC’s don’t need us, they would be the natives in the land. Why would they want to help a player, or want a shiny diamond? They would probably just want food and shelter just like the player wants at the start of the game and nothing else. They going to have hopes and dreams of building a large castle?
I could see them as helpful because you could trade with them, and they would be an “amusing” interaction, but that would be it, they would serve no real purpose in surviving, or helping the player besides keeping your sanity.

Things that irritate me in SC

    – Items disappear quickly (if you die away from your home, when you get to the place that died the items will not be there any more) when that happens I pick up the items I lost in the creative because it is a bug

    – Die with 2 blocks high on the horse

    – Not being able to run

    – The day ends quickly.

    – Tired quickly

    • Posted January 18, 2017 at 19:57 | Permalink | Reply

      1. This is not a bug but intentional to make it challenging. You are not supposed to die and actually dying is normally quite serious in real life and should be regarded so in SC as well. It is so in MC as well.
      2. i know this is a bit frustrating and maybe the reason I stopped using horses, especially where there area lot of trees. It is realistic though as you can die when ride a horse and a tree branch hits you.
      3. You think you always run, since you can almost outrun (“outwalk”) a wolf.
      4. This is also to make it a bit more challenging.
      5. Again, to make that the game is not too easy. Usually you will only tire quickly when you run on sand or go uphill, without steps especially, as well as water. This is fairly realistic, as sand really tire you a lot. Maybe we could last a bit longer in water though. People can swim long distances. This makes the game a bit more challenging.

My one frustration with Minecraft is that it is utterly, intensely, stupendously, way too easy.

I did want longer days/nights so you wake up when the moon is setting and the sun is just barely rising, but you can make an alarm clock to wake up earlier.

Can you actually make an alarm clock to wake up earlier? This sounds ridiculous, but it sounds like it would be the kind of detail he’d add.

Maybe he should make it so that loud noises can wake you up, so that would be good fro sound generators but annoying for when there is, say, a wolf howling.

        • Posted January 19, 2017 at 12:56 | Permalink

Yeah the werewolf alarm is what I used, just modified it some and attached a dispenser (Total cost: 10 germanium, like 5 copper~) Then has the dispenser shoot my character with a feather… it did something like .1 damage to my character’s health but woke right up as the sun was about to rise. I think after using it about 12 times or so it did mess with my character’s sleep pattern, but it screws up on it’s own anyway after 40-50 days…

A daily alarm can be made a lot simpler than the werewolf alarm. I just realized that I didn’t add one to the wiki page:

I’ll add it shortly. I usually add an enable switch to it as well. Then it only goes off when you need it and won’t drain the dispenser while you’re away.

          Posted January 20, 2017 at 19:35 | Permalink

(Can’t edit – yes, a daily alarm is almost identical to the were alarm. It’s now detailed on that wiki page…

        • Posted January 20, 2017 at 21:24 | Permalink

Stanimus one little thing… How is your alarm “waking” your character? Also my alarm dispenses a feather once a day at dawn… A father, or a cotton ball… I can reuse the cotton ball/father daily! Drain the dispenser? Will it break after 30 days? Please tell me where I’m wrong, I love to learn.

Justin, I did the same – have a dispenser shoot something little. Ivy, grass or snowballs are good since they regenerate. I add an enable switch because I often sleep different places. I’m afraid of constantly draining the dispenser while I’m away from the alarm a long time.

      • Posted January 19, 2017 at 01:39 | Permalink | Reply

Minecraft is like any game really. It depends on how you play. If you are a simple farmer just trying to survive it’s going to be easy, but if you play more aggressive and don’t turn away from fights the game can very well screw you quickly. Just like Survivalcraft, if you just live on an ostrich farm you’ll never have problems, but if you like to travel at night you’ll be a dead man by morning.

On a different note, I completely agree with you. These things need to stay in the game, except I think the survivor should be able to swim longer.

      • Posted January 20, 2017 at 18:19 | Permalink | Reply

With clothes you cannot swim far easily. Maybe change it so without clothes you can swim much further? You’re correct about running on sand.

When you play using BUTTONS, you are always running. That’s why you get tired so quickly! Use the touchpad if you want to walk slower.
I would agree with a longer day. But, it is what it is… And I often use an alarm clock. When you wake ‘naturally’, about 1/8 of the day has already passed.
