New Feature News

These days, almost all the time I am working on the new feature.

It is getting nicer every day. And remember how excited I was about it a week or two ago? It’s better now :-) And still not finished. I can’t even start to fathom what you will make with it.

I even told you I will be able to marry it with crafting and electricity. It is now tied with crafting, but not yet with electricity.

Something I accidentally discovered when playing with it today is that you can make torches that switch off and on. A nice feature on its own, but just a minor, minor side effect that I did not even realize existed :-)

It’s taking loads of time because some of the implementation details are very complex. I even had to make my own garbage collection system.

Anyway, huge smile, but no reveal yet.

Ok, just one cute thing to get you thinking:

It is hard to know if you impressed the person you look up to if you don’t get any feedback from him….
I look up to him and the artwork I created makes me happy but to be honest with you it was all inspired by him…
It is very important to me and my self esteem to get recognition from the person I am trying to impress otherwise it makes me fell like a bunch of work I did was useless…
This I believe is by far the best Survivalcraft artwork I have ever done, all in an effort to read his comment on it or even better to be mentioned in a post for it….
Please kaalus if you are out there just let me know if you like it.. O:-)

Well, you cannot always get attention from the one you want it from most. It’s something you’ll learn when you are older. Take the compliments that you get and try not to think about the ones you don’t get; life’s easier that way.

        • Posted February 12, 2016 at 03:06 | Permalink

I already know this and I grately appreciate the complements I am getting
But it is not the complements I am not getting that are getting to me but the very idea that I get no sign of life when I fell I need it most….
I do believe that getting no sign of life is helpful as it just pushes me to do better; however, there is an extent to which this becomes harmful and makes me just want to stop for a while until I can muster enough strength to keep going…
It is something that I feel not many understand….
Unless you are an artist as dedicated as I you won’t fully understand why recognition from a specific individual is all that can make me continue to work hard at what I do…

        • Posted February 18, 2016 at 21:27 | Permalink

I’m an artist, and I can tell you from experience that if you look for recognition from outside yourself, you will always be disappointed. Even when someone responds positively to your art, you’ll feel validated but it soon fades and then you’ll feel the need for even more validation. Artists are their own worst critics! I’ve built worlds in Survivalcraft for forum community builds that I deleted over and over, they were never good enough – just like many drawings, paintings and even professional graphic designs I’ve done. But when I finally do present my work, *I* feel really good about what I’ve done, so I don’t need validation from anyone else. It is wonderful to hear good things, but just keep up your work and understand that you will always be your own worst and best critic. Creating something is what really matters. Hope this eases your mind. :)

Because a picture is made up of pixels. Since it was take in low quality the pixels are dilated.

Maybe when he said “you can make torches that switch off and on. A nice feature on its own” so maybe every block or item can be edited in the game very detailedly cause he some have their own feature you can do stuff with.

    So much work…

  22. Posted February 12, 2016 at 05:25 | Permalink | Reply

It is not sculpting. It is basically shrinking blocks. You go into a building mode where you build something and when you click done, it shrinks down to an item which floats as a block which you can then pick up and use. It is almost like micro blocks.

It ties in with crafting, meaning you will be able to use it in survival. There will be a recipe for an item that will help you create these items.

I did not expect that you’ll be able to use different colours inside an item.

    • Posted February 12, 2016 at 05:39 | Permalink | Reply

I count about 12-13 blocks high. I suspect that the array size of an item will be 16x16x16. That means one block will concists of 3072 micro blocks. I’m just wondering what impact this will have on performance if you have a lot of items in a world. There will probably be a rendering distance for micro blocks as well. This feature will however revolutionise SC.

Now just think what it will do if you build electrics and then shrink down circuits. It sounds a bit too tricky.

      • Posted February 12, 2016 at 05:52 | Permalink | Reply

It means that if he doesn’t use similar hacks to the memory banks you will need 4096 bits of data. Whatever happens, that will mean micro/sculpted/whatever blocks will each take up half a kilobyte of space in your world without some very good compression. This is why I’m skeptical.

        • Posted February 12, 2016 at 06:09 | Permalink

Yes, it will have a huge impact on a world’s size, unless he limited the amount of user blocks you can make. Maybe this is the clue. This is not just micro building, it is creating custom blocks, but a limited amount. That would solve many problems, especially size. I hope there will be enough custom blocks.

        • boredidentity
          Posted February 13, 2016 at 16:31 | Permalink

I would think that, if you (Johnny) are correct with 16x16x16, that it would need 32 bits per microblock, times 4096 microblocks. Meaning 131,072 bits, or 16,384 bytes. I too would assume that the world file itself only holds a reference to another part of the file, or a separate file completely. However, why would this need all 32? “I have plans for a new grand feature that will need every single one of these new bits.” That would leave room for billions of references, or more. Still, custom blocks certainly makes the most sense of the clues.

    • Posted February 12, 2016 at 06:15 | Permalink | Reply

Well it’s shaping blocks somehow that’s for sure. But, I hope your “operation” is not the case (before you hate on me listen to my reasoning) that seems like a really sloppy way of doing it. The concept of playing survival and building huge structures just to craft some things seems extremely annoying. I still have no clue how it would work though.

How else could you build such detailed items? Theres no way someone on there phone could place blocks correctly that are that small. Having them shrink down seems the only logical way to go about doing this.

      • Posted February 13, 2016 at 17:09 | Permalink | Reply

Just follow the clue upto now. The thing many people thought to be a twig, looked like it was not http touching the ground in the same way as if it was floating and turning like a dropped item.

Behind the chair, was four dots that could have been the chair’s legs, although they seemed a bit closer to each other. The first item also supports this theory,as well as the flower pot, which is an enlarged and cropped photo.

And then one thing more, please give me an alternative explanation that makes sense.

Mmm. So you have decided it is good to insult people. We are not trying to be smart, we are just playing the game Kaalus has set up, to figure out what he is making. This is common in this forum. If you don’t like the game, don’t insult the ones playing it. I am just guessing and I might be wrong. I’ve been wrong about the dispenser. What do you do then? You must get over it. It is not about who is the smartest. We all try to figure it out together and actually help each other gain insight. At the end it is not just one guy who have solved the riddle, but all of us together.

Sent just insult, rather give a better option, maybe you can help us solve this.

What is it with you guys? I am just guessing as the rest. I might be confident about my ideas, yet they are still just ideas. Being confident does not always imply that somebody is arrogant, does it? I could have streched out my explanation by adding words like, “more likely”, or “probably rather” or whatever. I was under the impression people will understand what I’m trying to say. I was typing on my cell phone, so I did not want to type so much and was trying to be economical with my words. I was not dictating a world class essay. I am sorry for frustrating you by this.

Mabey we are getting a new crafting table to craft these things and it will show us a picture of what we made so far in a black void background like in the picture

I think what is most interesting is how I can do stuff with it in electricity as you can make a torch that turns on and off so mabey we combine our custom item with other items to give it its properties so a button and light to make special torch. Just a guess though

However if this is true I’m going to make that cute innocent flower into a deadly explosive killing machine >:)

        • Posted February 13, 2016 at 19:34 | Permalink

I said I would not participate in insulting and for now you have stopped that. How did I attack in a way that you did not know what you were talking about? The first post I got from you, was:

“Assumptions get you no where, don’t act smart because you’re acting stupid”

If that is not insulting, what is? Maybe in some way I have misunderstood this then? On your second post I merely replied “no” to your reply concerning the new crafting table, because I disagreed, not because I thought you were stupid or something. Maybe that was a bit direct and if I offended you, I am sorry but do you think your reply with insults was OK?

    Another conjecture:

There will be new open slots, much like the user inventory. If you click on an open slot, you get an option to edit it, maybe the edit button, like with a memory block. Then you can begin to construct your item and click done. I just hope that Kaalus gives us enough open slots, otherwise this feature will not be great.

The main reason I think it will use 32 bits, is because Kaalus will need the extra item id’s. Maybe I’m wrong.

Using dispensers to plant seeds !!! (auto-planting or auto seeding whatever you call it lol)
Using dispensers to plant those seeds would be really ease up our farming. We already have dispensers to throw fertilizers and a harvester. But having dispensers to plant those seed would be really really ease our farming and the time it consumes on our everday lives in the cruel mode and challenging. But of course the time it costs you to build these and arrange these so that it would work would really need time in SC and it pays off the hard work and planning in how you build these. I know that some might think that these would take away the survival theme in survivalcraft but we already have more advanced items like in electricity. This would benifit us all in our everyday lives in SC like in farming(i mean benefit us all farmers in sc).

Hi Kaalus, I found an error. I downloaded a electric world, but it was in 1.23, when the world was upgraded to 1.29, all the delay gates became unable to be edited, even in the worlds that I created. I had to uninstall the game and install again to back to normal, but if I install the “1.23 world again” the problem will return. Thank you so much.

(And what about the goal to go back to civilization, survival man?

You assumed that the delay gates you added when in v1.23 would be changed to the new adjustable delay gates. That was in error. The adjustable delay gates do not replace the original ones – they are an entirely new device, in addition to the original ones. (I made the same mistake.) You need to go into the world destroy all your old fixed delay gates and replace them with the new adjustable ones. If they’re what you want.

(…and what goal to return to civilization? …and why?)

Oh, I got it. But the worlds that I created in 1.29 with delay gates became unable to edit too, but already returned to normal.
And about the civilization, I said to Kaalus that would be a good idea if the game would has a goal (like MC to you go to the end ) and someone showed me this link of a post that Kaalus said about “return to civilization” or something else.
        But thank you so much

What do you mean by garbage collection system?

    • Posted February 12, 2016 at 13:40 | Permalink | Reply

Garbage collection is a programming term to describe the freeing up of memory allocated to something. Most languages have built-in garbage collection, with C and its derivatives being the exceptions from the top of my head.

If the memory is not freed up after use it is called a ‘memory leak’ and will crash the program when it runs out of RAM.

I think to call it sculpting or micro blocks is not correct although it is a type of micro blocks. We can rather just call it custom blocks. That is why Kaalus needed 32 bits. He did say that he was thinking of increasing the block id’s to 1024. Every custom block will need a number or id. By doing this, every custom block is rendered in the same way steps, slabs, trap doors, fences, doors, Christmas trees, targets etc are rendered. If micro blocks are used, rendering becomes much slower and will use up much more memory.

I know custom blocks well take up a lot of memory and older devices with only 512M memory or less might struggle to open worlds with many custom blocks. This is why Kaalus has written his own garbage collecting system to free up as much memory as possible.

The big question now is, how many custom slots will Kaalus allow. I hope it is not too little, otherwise this feature becomes useless. I would also like it if it were possible to upload custom sets to the community so everyone can share in the creations. It would also be great to merge sets. This is huge.

Am I in the right track Kaalus? How many custom blocks?

Maybe you can make more than one set of custom blocks. In this way, downloading a set won’t delete existing sets in a world. Another option would be to not connect a set with a world, but in the same way as block textures in a separate file. This would be great to use the same custom blocks in different worlds. You actually already have “custom” blocks. Kaalus was just the creator of those blocks: trap grass, christmas tree (a bit big though), fences etc. Many people have asked for toilets, basins, furniture etc. All now Kaalus now longer need to create every one’s desire, we create or own. Thanks die this! The Christmas tree by the way, does have electrics inside it.

    • Posted February 12, 2016 at 14:29 | Permalink | Reply

Now we can have smoother slanted roofs, balls, rounded roofs (using many custom blocks). This is almost as good as having vector graphics. Just one thing, these blocks must be rotatable.

    • Posted February 12, 2016 at 17:11 | Permalink | Reply

I don’t think it’s “micro blocks” Like they exist independently. Look at all these objects so far. They look that way yes. But, I think full size blocks are being used to construct a new model, and then we are able select a region containing these blocks. All are “flattened” into a single custom block as you suggest, which has a higher surface polygon count. And apparently the original employed textures are also flattened into a new texture mapped to that custom block.

So, sculpting with regular blocks using the game as the 3d modeling IDE, to produce higher res custom blocks.

Dude this was my guess first, if you want proof go look at the chair post. I guessed that it was the ability to build the block with real size blocks then store it.

Not that it is a big issue for me, but how could I gather that from what you said:

Sweet! I totally get it now! I think.

But if it’s what I think, it couldn’t be constructed from those 4 dirt patches in the background, the chair is at least 9x9x9 which would account for quite a bit of bits. I don’t see how it’d be done but it looks great.

And when he means to make it work with electricity, that is exactly what he is trying toi say, command blocks activated by elictricity

I guessed command block because how the heck could we trigger a torch’s lights without defying physics, right?

Best bet would be triggering a torch on and off using a command.

And of course we need an interface for the commands. And that is why I thought maybe its command block. Haha. Just guessing tho.

It’s a custom item generator that can combine features, functionality of items eg a light switch combined with a torch. I can see how it would have a huge impact on memory thus the need for custom garbage collection. This has to be some amazing code.

Right, I am going to categorically lay down why I do not think it can be micro blocks/sculpting.

Firstly, I can not think of anything else that it could be. I have no better ideas. Maybe I am wrong. It just seems so impossible.

Blocks have 18 bits of data that they can use for variants of themselves. 2^18 = 262144 variants. Each extra bit means twice as many variants. If ONLY ONE block type could be used which is clearly not true from the flower picture then there can be just 18 voxels within each sculpted block. This enough for 2×2×2 micro blocks in each block but not enough for 3×3×3. For 16×16×16, you would need 4096 bits.

If multiple blocks can be used then there are basically no options available and it would not work. You would need 40960 bits for 16×16×16 and even more for paintables etc. However…

‘What about memory banks? They can hold 1024 bits of data.’ Yes. Yes they can. I think that memory banks have block entities connected to them like chests etc. This basically gives them unlimited memory. The point is that this doesn’t need 32 bits as Kaalus said the new feature did. It either needs 4096 bits or 16. 32 is no help.

Additionally for just one block type each sculpted block would take up 0.5kB of space. With multiple block types 5kB. This means that if every block was sculpted each chunk would be at least 160 MB. Eeek. As opposed to 128 kB without.

‘As any programmer worth his salt will tell you, some clever encoding schemes can be used (and I do a lot of these with the electrics), but they are not magic and won’t turn 4 bits into 24.’ [In this case 40960]
    Kaalus

      Note:

‘Maybe I am wrong. It just seems so impossible.’

I do NOT mean ‘Me? Wrong? Impossible!’
I mean that for MB/sculpting to be added seems impossible.

      Should have proof-read before posting.

    • Posted February 13, 2016 at 17:02 | Permalink | Reply

Did you read my post on custom blocks? Custom blocks solve all of these problems. A normal block also has these problems, like stairs, slabs, fences, trap doors, doors, christmas tree etc. They contain a lot of data. Custom blocks would require data once and then as you use these blocks, they would be just like any other block as mentioned. The more complex they are allowed to be, the more data they will use.

Well you could say that Kaalus could have done this with only 16 bits. Yes he could, but what prevented him from doing so? He did not have enough item id’s. He clearly mentioned this. He will use the 32 bits for the extra block id’s. He will not use it all, since he will still need them for future things like mine carts.

This is the only thing that makes sense upto now.

    • Posted February 13, 2016 at 17:23 | Permalink | Reply

In voxel engines this is called block sprites and is based on the idea that if everything was just normal blocks there would be no detail so you can something out of normal sized blocks then store the texture coordinates the vertices and light points in a single block

      • Posted February 13, 2016 at 17:26 | Permalink | Reply

So pretty much you are not storing the individual block data you can just store the object as a whole as a new block type and this is very well possible with 32 bits of data(even though it might take some extremely clever tricks and I think we all know by now that kaalus knows what he doing).

      • Posted February 13, 2016 at 17:30 | Permalink | Reply

The main thing the extra bits will be needed for, will be for the block id’s. One more thing, the only thing we can deduce from the flower put, is that different colours are used. If it remains one material, then just adding colours will only use 4 bits per “pixel”. That won’t be too much.

I just cannot figure out how electricity can be linked to it. That would complicate it to much.
