Sky glitches on Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0

I made a trip to a local supermarket and, based on your bug reports, got myself yet another testing tablet, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0.

Here’s how the sky looks on its screen:

Survivalcraft 2015-03-29 22-44-19-

First of all, this is not a new problem. Survivalcraft 1.26 looks exactly the same. This is not a problem with the game at all, it’s the rubbish GPU they put into this thing. It cannot clip polygons properly, all polygons which cross the near clipping plane get distorted.

Please do not buy this tablet, or indeed any tablet that uses shady GPUs. This one has Marvell PXA1088 CPU + some “Vivante GT” GPU. A combination from hell, names alone should set the warning bells ringing.

Samsung

It is pretty, but stay away!

Most Samsungs are good, this one sadly is an exception. Reliable CPUs come from nVidia (Tegra), Qualcomm (Adreno), Samsung (Exynos), PowerVR, Mali, maybe a few others. Anything else and you’re getting yourself in for trouble.

What can I do to workaround this? I will cut the sky into small polygons, hurting performance, so that you do not see when GPU makes a hash out of clipping them, because they will be (mostly) outside of the screen.

Please stay tuned for 1.27.4.

Sucks that many opportunities for new things are lost and many problems arise because you have to make the game compatible with junk like this. Ah well…

I think a lot people take developers’ hard work for granted. I think it’s awesome that you pick up different devices just to make sure the game runs smoothly on them. Kudos for your devotion, man.

While I do agree WP UI is the best, it lags WAY BEHIND in apps. Also, everyone has their choice while buying a phone. I have all three and they are great in their own right.

It’s a shame that you have to decrease performance just to support junk like this or any other. In my opinion 2.3 Android should already be unsupported.

My cousin had same problem on his samsung galaxy tab.
When i saw it, i told him that i should try to fix it.

I went to settings then performance and then turned the sky rendering mode disable.

The problem was solved and he was happy by my work.

    I don’t understand…
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini and there isn’t this graphical bug…
Is that a problem for new Samsung devices?
Someone can explain to me better?

There are apparently BAD internals inside this specific device which screw up Survivalcraft. Nothing to worry, they are pretty cheap and if you spend more you get better :)

Hello , I had a doubt about it, you Kaalus refers to all models TAB4 7.0, or only some variant ?

I have the tab 4 , SMT230NT model , it does not show any graphic bug so far .

If you tell me that it is not good , I immediately break = D .

Sorry for my English , I use translator.

    • Posted March 29, 2015 at 21:57 | Permalink | Reply

It is SM-T230 with Android 4.4.2. If you look in Settings/Compatibility/Game Log, GLES Renderer should read Vivante GC1000.

        Hello Kaalus
        Gles Renderer = Adreno ( tm) 305
        That’s good?
the manufacturing South America , it is generally not good option. I’m lucky, I’ll have no problems in playing SC .
Thank Kaalus the good work .

Kaalus. Since you have this tablet (as I do) can you do me a favor? Can you grab the calendar storage apk off of it and send it to me? I accidentally deleted mine (I’m rooted).

        glitches are worse now.

    Dear Kaalus.
Thank you for trying to fix this.
I have this tablet and I have this glitch.
    All I can say is:
    Please don’t decrease performance.
I will better buy a better device and have a very great version of survivalcraft as a downscaled game.
I can live with this bug. All I have to do is deactive the clouds in the settings.

Would you please make an option to deactivate sensors (hunger, temparature and health) ?
I think without sensors the game is more immersive.

    Thank you!

Indeed, devices are so cheap nowadays and easy to replace, there are probably hundreds of app not woking on these devices, I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 myself (Snapdragon800/Adreno330) so it is easy for me to talk…But…Can people not turn off the sky in settings, or create an option to select an “alternative devices” option under a new settings tab like “experimental features”?
Or that people can create their own sky textures? (Like a gigantic other planet dooming up from the horizon.)
But it is probably easier said than done I’m sure! (-:
Or perhaps create a poll on the Lefora forums on how many people are troubled by it?
Perhaps people are not really troubled at all?

  23. Posted March 29, 2015 at 19:39 | Permalink | Reply

Uhm… About my previous comment; I don’t think sky textures would not work though for this glitch…

  24. Posted March 29, 2015 at 19:49 | Permalink | Reply

…And there is already a “compatibility” tab, hahaha! Sorry ’bout that!
But perhaps turning off multithreading will fix the problem?
