Magma Ocean

I am hard at work to finish 1.23. It’s high time to release it!

There is still some electrics work left to do. In one of the earlier posts I mentioned that there is just one element left to add. It turned out that there are three. Two of them have proved to be insanely difficult. Such is life!

Anyway, after many shenanigans things are looking brighter tonight. Stay tuned for more info on the electrics – once it’s finished.

In the meantime, there are a few smaller changes I haven’t told you about yet. Sort of cherries on the cake that 1.23 will hopefully be :-)

For example ocean filled with magma instead of water in flat worlds. This was suggested by one of you when I posted info about changing terrain block type. Great idea, thanks! Never thought of this myself. You know who you are.

MagmaOcean1

Here’s how it looks like:

MagmaOcean2

No fish in there :-(

How about “geysers” which spew an unlimited supply of saltpeter? Would make farming more feasible. Currently, endlessly mining for saltpeter is just way too much of a chore for farming to be worthwhile. So I just slaughter animals for food instead. Poor animals.

        • Posted October 4, 2013 at 15:25 | Permalink

I agree with the thought of making a more stable source of saltpeter. Also, I don’t know if I like the random blocks loose their fertilization. It’s anoying to have to guess if a block has lost it’s fertalization, but that is the best representation of what happens in real life. Besides, one piece of saltpeter can’t last for time and all eternity.

Henry Padilla (I can’t reply to your post so I’m replying to my own), I edited my texture file to make fertilized dirt very obvious. It’s the texture on row 4, column 6 (upper left corner being row 1, column 1).

I experimented and found that a percentage of blocks lose their fertilized status after growing a single harvest of rye. So for full yield on every harvest, you really need to fertilize every time. Each piece of saltpeter fertilizes 9 blocks (the block you touch and the eight blocks around it).

        • Posted October 4, 2013 at 17:14 | Permalink

And I can’t reply to your post. I think it has to do with the level.

Anyway, thanks for that. I didn’t realize that fertilized dirt had its own texture. I’m going to use that.

        • Posted October 4, 2013 at 21:31 | Permalink

Each fertilized block is good for growing 3 ryes. After the 3rd one, it will revert to unfertilized. The fertilizer is only used up when a mature rye plant is produced, wild rye does not use it up. Each fertilization resets the counter back to 3. Btw. you don’t _need_ fertilizer to grow rye, it just makes the yield better. A hydrated field without fertilizer should still produce a fair amount of usable rye. Even unhydrated and unfertilized field will do, although it will take a long time to grow and most of the plants will go wild.

I think if more biomes are ever added he can put more animals that match da biome. Like pirahnas in tropical rainforest. Can’t wait for update though. :D

Bigfoot would be a great idea! 3 blocks tall, lives in wooded areas, brown color (Sasquatch) white color (Yeti) passive but aggressive when provoked, rare like the White Bull, “knocks” on trees at night, leaves foot prints behind. Who needs Herobine? Corner the market with a Bigfoot Kaalus:D

    • Posted October 4, 2013 at 05:51 | Permalink | Reply

If anything Kaalus… The player has to eat, sleep, rest and have air….so…. To add another element to the survival aspect of the game, why not make it more realistic and add THIRST to this game… Ocean water becomes salty and therefore you cannot drink it, and then the player must pursue FRESH water, therefore seeking out a place to live with a lake or pond nearby would be very realalistic. Just use a bucket for water and consume it like a food item.

      • Posted October 4, 2013 at 15:29 | Permalink | Reply

That would place too much importance on coper too early in the game. Unless you found a way of drinking without a bucket (but you can use the bucket to “store”water for later) than you can implement.

And, how about mods that would let you drive stuff such as a 250 block cruise ship (what I am building right now ;) ) or a car on land that can go really fast and could haul things.

I don’t know if kaalus really knows why we don’t like to farm. It’s simple! IT’S TO HARD. What makes it hard? Saltpeter. This resource is very hard to find, and when it runs out, you know you won’t be finding any for a long time. A solution? Perhaps in 1.24 you could have cows give us little presents for us to turn into fertilizer, or even make applying saltpeter a one time thing! Even so, no one will farm until there is a change in gaining forms of fertilizer, because saltpeter is to rare and far between.

  27. Posted October 4, 2013 at 19:24 | Permalink | Reply

Upon reading your comment I decided to see how much saltpeter one could find in creative. The results ended with very little saltpeter save in one area. So if you do not have the dumb luck to find a large deposit of saltpeter than your out of luck. (The survey included one medium desert and one slightly larger. The large deposit being found in the medium deposit.) Therefore I stand by my post. Either cows should give the survivor “gifts” or we should at least get more saltpeter per block we break.

  29. Posted October 4, 2013 at 19:38 | Permalink | Reply

Upon further… further study I have developed a theory. Saltpeter is mostyly found along the edge of deserts. The reason? I honestly have no idea why salpeter spawns that way. The results: much more saltpeter (about 100% more was found) was found on the edges of deserts about 3 to 5 blocks into the desert, not in the middle. So I guess I’ll try out my theory in harmless mode (challenging made me very angry).

  30. Posted October 4, 2013 at 19:51 | Permalink | Reply

Could you increase the size of desert biomes? It doesn’t fit well in worlds I am making that every 20 blocks it seems there is a desert. In real life deserts are larger and spread out. Not just little blobs everywhere. (Not trying to offend you as I admire the effort you put into making this game based on people’s requests)

    • Posted October 4, 2013 at 22:44 | Permalink | Reply

There is enough dessert for me, a patch or two of it is enough…cacti and saltpeter is the only benefit. If anything improve the swamp biomes. Add vines (decorative, climbable like a ladder) alligator (meat, leather, amphibious, would be the very first reptile in the game) and lily pads, placed on water (can be walked on)

If you added thirst you would have to add wooden bowls or wooden cups so that you wouldn’t have to immediately rely on having copper so early on.

I find saltpeter pretty reliably in those random areas where there will be a strip of random sand in a non desert biome. If you dig out all the sand you will usually end up with a ravine like strip about ten or so blocks deep with the bottom lined with saltpeter. this has been my experience anyways.

    Bears
Bulls (will randomly try to kick you off)

    PAINTABLES:
    Fences
Horses (will show flowers, hearts,… in that paint color)

      CRAFTABLES:
      Giraffe harness:

      Saddle. Nothing. Nothing
      Woodslab Nothing. Nothing
      Saddle. Nothing. Nothing

      It works kinda funny.
      1. Tap giraffe with harness in hand
      2. There will be two platforms, on on top (with wood slab beneath), and one on the actual giraffe
      3. Tap the top platform or bottom saddle
      4. The rest works like normal horse

Rope. I’ve heard of rope crafted from plant material, so it will save you some time vs. making a new animal and sissors

      Wild rye. Wild Rye. Nothing
      Wild rye. Wild rye. Nothing
      Wild rye. Wild rye. Nothing

Rope has 2 uses. Boats and animals
      1. Place rope in hand and tap animal/boat
      2. Tug animal/boat to nearest fence post
      3. Tap fence post. The animal/boat is now tied to the fence post and cannot move vary far. On rare occasion, your animal will break free. Boats on even rarer occasion.
      4. There is a 5.5% chance your animal is claustrophobic. If it is, it increases the chances of it breaking free by 30%
      5. To untie animal just “mine” the rope or fence post. This will untie animal or boat. If animal is claustrophobic it will run away immediately.

Iron boat. Moves faster, can place chest inside, and is more durrible.

Crafted like boat, but with iron

What we really need is a new ranged type of weapon. Considering we have gunpowder kegs we should have an old rifle that we load with gunpowder and a iron ball. Sasquatch is a fantastic idea and it fits the game well. Also I’m into more industrial things so could we have a new type of transport like a train?

I like the new electronics idea, but I think there should be more industrial machines to help with things like mining and farming. Obviously you would have to mine manually to begun with, but maybe a mining drill could later be obtained as well as some way to power it. So it loses energy nor durability. Armour would be a nice edition, but I think there should not be a enchanting system. Survival craft is about realism thus a upgrade system via scientific means makes more sense. As for animals I think that ridable flying creature might be a good idea. Possibly a pterodactyl fossil that you can mine and then you use machines to recreate the animal. Just a few ideas.

I think there needs to be a better way tobuild in creative mode. Maybe have a button to click that you highlight blocks then set the number you want to raise or lower them. It would make building tall structures much easier.

And also with the addition of new items each update, I think they should be categorized in certain groups such as food, electrics, etc. This way you do not have to scroll to the bottom to find something.

No actually it isn’t. Yes, similar things are grouped together but I meant that it would be easier to have it set up like the recipaedia page.
