Option To Lock Community Content?

Community Content is a great thing to have in the game. It will become even better with the next update, when you’ll be able to rate and report content. Top listed items will become better, and fluff will sink to the bottom.

However, there is always the bad and the ugly – worlds containing bad language and other offensive stuff. Reporting in 1.23 will help to keep it down, but I am sure a thing or two will pop up from time to time.

Because the game is played by a lot of kids, parents are getting upset, and rightly so. At the moment I have do to a daily scan and manually remove things and ban users to keep it under control. This is taking up a lot of my time and literally sucking the energy out of me.

So  I am toying with the idea of adding a setting to permanently lock community content. Once locked, you would need to reinstall the game to get it back. Parents of young children could find it very handy.

What do you think?

How about you can only set that option 1 time and than you can’t do anything to it intill the next update. For example, I clicked “NO” for locking CC and I won’t be able to click “YES” till the next update.

Not good KAALUS. Cause they might lock it down then want it back. And if they don’t know now to use Dropbox then their worlds will be deleted. Just a thought.

To reinstall the game on most mobile devices is free, the device will remember the games you bought and voila! your game is back (with the drawback that you have no worlds)

Maybe making it unlockable just by a password?

  11. Posted September 14, 2013 at 13:29 | Permalink | Reply

I don’t know about permanent locking but perhaps you would have to enter a code to get it back? A code entered by the parent.

Hi Kaalus, locking content is a great idea and I’ll use it for my kids but is rather it not be a permanent lock as there are worlds and texture packs I’m happy for them to have and having to uninstall and reinstall world be a real pain. Could you lock the page behind a PIN?

Add a parental lock option that only allows community content with x # of ratings at a very high rating to be downloaded. The kiddies might not be able to download the newest maps or textures right away, but giving them access to some is better then none. Maybe a parental control panel under options could allow parents to choose a ‘low’, ‘medium’, or ‘high’ level of security. Low might be x = 100 with r>4; med something like x=250 with r>5; there would also be the option to lock all content, and of course the ability to password protect the panel, and have that password emailed to a parent so they don’t forget it. If the option is easy enough for parents to understand, then you empower them to protect their kids. The kiddos would be happy because at least some is better then none. You would be happy because you’d gain a point in awesomeness. I’d be happy if you’d not put minecarts in the game–instead put coal powered locomotives box cars and caboose:)

Protecting the kiddies from perverted terrorists, one good idea at a time.

Is this a permanent lock on all community content or on a file-by-file basis? I would not want to see all of community content locked out, as kids do grow up, except those who post offensive material, of course.

How about adding a “Positive” section to the content reporting section? Include reasons such as Family safe and others I’m unable to think of right now as I just got up and haven’t kick-started my brain with coffee yet.

Being able to lock content by report category would be more useful… Don’t like Hate speech? Lock out the content that the majority finds offensive for that reason. Don’t like off-color language? Same thing.

Totally agree, my daughters love playing SC as much as I do (or more) and the youngest is 7, I don’t want them to access things that are not appropriate… I taught them well about bad or wrong things but I’d prefer then not have to deal with it if I can help it…

Can u instead place a lock on the community. Like a passcode that we can set ourselves (aka the parents). Be easier instead of deleting the game.

A password would be the best idea.If a child wants to download a world from the community ,there parents would put the password in then look at the worlds with the kids ,that’s better then uninstalling the game then reinstalling it :)

Like the idea but why not just lock the community section with a password. A simple 4 number password or a complicated password similar to the lock methods on ios.
Lets also make confirmation of lockage, we don’t want to lock ourselves out by accident.

If Survivalcraft is starting to become big and you’re thinking of having an online multiplayer chose as well. Maybe you should start thinking about having some Survivalcraft staff to monitor the game and forum. Much like what Minecraft has. You may as well go for the full monty.

Ha, I wonder if you’ll ever get to see this one lol.

I really have no interest in community content, but I really dislike this idea. Honestly any feature that requires a reinstall of the software is not a feature, it is a bug by any programming standard. And terriable programming and design. And you are a great programmer and visionary within this gaming genre. Find a different solution. This is far beneath your skills and design.

First off, as this is my first post, great game Kaalus. The fact you have done so much in such a short time is truly impressive. Please keep up the great work.

I do like the idea of parental controls. It would be nice if the user base was mature enough to not post things that are inappropriate, but we all know that is the case. I do agree with the few that have mentioned a password option though. Even a simple 4 digit combo would be a huge improvement over a permanent lock requiring a full reinstall.

Good idea but i think YOU SHOULD PUT A PASSWORD ON IT INSTEAD, just bolded to make it more visible.Great game :)

Good idea kaalus. But……a lock that can only be removed by reinstalling? That’s just disaster if the world’s are lost. I am not sure if the world’s woukd stay if uninstalled and reinstalled or not. This is a problem. Plus while I’m on the matter of keeping world’s. If I got a new kindle, would my world’s still be there under drop box in the private ad card section?
