I have finished work on allowing you to share block textures and maps. This will be soon released along with 1.20, and hopefully will allow pretty much everyone to easily download custom content.
Here’s how it works:
Someone creates custom content (block textures and worlds are supported) and uploads it somewhere on the internet, for example to his Dropbox.
Then he publishes the link to the content using this dialog in the game:
Once this is done, the link will start appearing in the list of community items in the game. Everyone can see this list and download anything from it by clicking a button.
The system ranks the items by download frequency, and lists most downloaded items first. Links that fail download many times (for example because the item is no longer accessible through the published link) will be downgraded and eventually removed.
Important thing to remember: the server does not store the actual content, only links to it. Like a search engine. It is the publisher responsibility to keep the content accessible through the link.
The easiest and recommended way to publish something is to upload it to your Dropbox, and then use the new “Copy Link” button to copy the link to the clipboard:
Once the link is in the clipboard, you can paste it into the Publish dialog.
The system will not allow publishing the same content more than once. There is also a limit of 5 published items per user. This is to avoid people spamming the system with worthless rubbish. I don’t think anyone can create and maintain more than 5 items and keep the quality up. The 5 items limit may be increased in the future if it proves too small. Of course, you can delete items you no longer want and publish new ones, as long as there is no more than 5 on the server at any given time.
When publishing something, choose the name carefully because there is no way to rename stuff (other than delete and republish, but that will reset the rankings).
