SD Card Access On Android

For Alpha 1.20 I expanded worlds and texture packs uploading/downloading to support other sources than Dropbox. On Android, you can now use your SD card (or external storage if your device has no SD card) to download/upload your worlds and texture packs.

This is good news, as some Android devices have issues with multitasking, and so cannot reliably login to Dropbox. You can now import stuff into the game and backup your worlds without ever touching Dropbox, or even having internet connection.

Here’s how the UI for content source selection looks like:

On Windows Phone I tried to add Skydrive. Unfortunately, after reading the docs I don’t even know if it’s possible. Microsoft API for Skydrive require a XAML-based applications to work, and Survivalcraft is XNA. So I gave up for now :-( I would probably have to roll out my own Skydrive library and work with it on the level of HTTP requests. That would be a lot of messing around…

Microsoft seem to have left XNA game developers out in the cold. Unless I am wrong about XNA not supporting the Skydrive API, that is.

I would think you would have to manually upload the saved files off your SD card onto Dropbox and download them to your WP from there.

You can make a SL+XNA App. Basically it’s primary a SL app, which can launch then the XNA Game. When you need Skydrive, you go back to the SL interface, and use the Skydrive API, then go back to the XNA game :)

There’s some work to be done but I guess it’s better than nothing.

Ugh. And microsoft must wonder why no one bothers switching over to windows phone. I love the UI and some of the features and wouldn’t change but I would never try convincing anyone to switch over to it. They’d hate me forever. Less apps which is a dealbreaker for most and way more closed than android. They are always a step behind.

WP8 has SD card support. The ATIV has an SD card slot.

There’s no way to access any of the new WP8 features from an XNA app. The game is basically running in legacy mode, where WP8 is kind of “emulating” an older WP7.5 device. I can’t even use the full resolution on the new phones, I am stuck with the old 800×480, because it’s all that was available on WP7.5. I added a nasty hack to let you change the aspect ratio, so that HTC8X owners do not have to stare at black bars on the sides. Microsoft could have done a little better here, but they chose not to. Sadly.

It makes me wary of Windows 8, because I remember the time when WP7 was all the rage, and Microsoft were pushing everyone to develop for it. And those that did felt good, for a while. But then suddenly there’s this new tram in town called WP8 and it doesn’t stop on WP7 station any more. A bunch of new happy guys are riding in it, but hey, soon there will be WP9 and these guys will be out and soaked in rain, like I am now. And just as Windows Mobile folks were before WP7.

So I’m not sure I want to make an effort to join the ride, even though it all looks shiny and smooth.

Kaalus, Microsoft has operated this way for decades. I think they view their “partners” as competitors. API churn keeps their “partners” always one step behind Microsoft, which is where Microsoft wants to keep them. That’s my theory, anyway. I could be full of bull.

And I assume that converting survivalcraft to a fully functional WP8 application would be impossible?
        Or at least very hard?

So does this mean that this is the end of the line for SurvivalCraft on Windows Phone? I am hoping that this can change in the future.
I am kind of tied to WP due to the excellent mail, outlook, and business tools support, and would like to take the future of Survivalcraft with me.
I was just checking so I know if I should continue evangelizing and sharing this game with friends. I can appreciate that the game is cross platform (as originally said this would benefit both platforms at the funding would be there to grow the operation).
It would be hard to evangelize the game to my friends on WP and Android if support is essentially ending at WP7 with a few hacks to keep it alive to some extent.

I can understand the concern about the future (like WP9). If nothing else maybe this can be revisited when more info starts to show up over the summer (assuming android/WP7 parity can be sustained).

        • Posted January 8, 2013 at 10:37 | Permalink

It’s not end of the line :-) I will keep releasing new versions for WP7, actually it’s my primary development platform, so it’s not going away. And WP8 can play WP7 games.

Take it that it would be more hassle than its worth to create a windows phone 8 version of survivalcraft, so users can backup their worlds on a SD card and have a better screen resolution…

I also presume that windows 7.8 won’t effect you in anyway?? (That’s if we get this update anytime soon)

Kaalus, is a blocks resistance, (I.e. dirt is 1.5) to do with amount of time it takes to break a block, or the amount of damage it can take? I realize that the values are proportional related, but how does the game calculate the actual process of determining how long it takes? My guess is that it is based on damage but I thought I would ask.

    • Posted January 8, 2013 at 22:18 | Permalink | Reply

This is how long you need to dig to break a block by hand. Tools make it faster, depending on the tool parameters, but it’s still proportional to this value.

As an android user i am very happy to see this :-) i wish Microsoft would be more user friendly toward developers. I was an early windows 7 user picking up my samsung focus in the first couple months of release but they need to cater more developers. My poor focus just gathers dust now hoping Microsoft will see the light.

Kaalus, I noticed while rummaging through the BlocksData.xml file from the Alpha 1.19 zip in the file section that there is only one sapling entry and image. I mention this because in the game each tree type(Oak, Birch, Spruce) has their own type of sapling.

Thought it might be worth mentioning,

Can’t find SC files on my SD card or my phone storage. The folder that says Survivalcraft is empty, both when I view the folder from my phone and from my PC hooked up to my phone via USB. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how did you fix it? I know this is likely not a problem with the game, but rather with my phone.
