Animals persistence

Before I can do any interesting things with the animals (e.g. taming), I need to solve the problem that animals disappear forever as soon as you leave the area. They need to stay. A related issue is that it’s impossible to keep the animals out of any area at the moment. As soon as you leave and come back, it may happen that a new batch of animals spawn inside your well fenced off field.

I have thought about it for a long time and I think I have a solution. I will work on it soon, and you might see it in 1.13 if everything goes well.

The result will be that the animals only spawn once in a given area. After that, no more spawning. This also means that you will be able to kill all of them and see no more until you walk further away and herd some back.

Additionally, I may make them spawn again if you leave the area for a very long time.

    In that case, how easy would it be to factor in breeding? Like, if you had a herd of cows with a bull, could calves appear occasionally? That way Survivalman won’t have to choose between getting hungry and dying, and getting lost ;]

    Not sure if that system would be better or not. In the long run it may make the world seem more lifeless.

    Also after you kill the animals around your home, what’s left to defend your home from?

      Hmm….yes and no. :-) I agree about animals overall; after the update that added animals, SC worlds felt much more alive & interactive in a way they hadn’t before. However, looking back at the real world (which Kaalus is trying to generally be true to): once you eliminate/displace the animals from an area, you’re usually safe from them for a long while. (Until they try to move back from another area, like undeveloped areas in the real world, or (say) other chunks in the game.) That’s one of the perks of investing time to develop one specific area — making it safe for the future, so you can focus on the next stage up from survival (say, stronger housing/shelter), then the next stage above that (cultivating land / livestock), then the next, and the next, etc.

      My take: Treat birds & land animals differently. Land animals tend not to travel long distances in a short time, and their motion is limited by the landscape; once they’re gone, it takes them a while to reestablish themselves. OTOH, birds fly halfway across the globe in a few months, can land anywhere, and (like SC’s birds) choose areas to stop based on the landscape / biome; you might see no birds on one day, then over a hundred the next day. Handling land animals vs. birds like that would give players a reason to invest in specific areas (more safety than being a pure nomad), while still making sure the world felt alive.

    Here’s a better idea, possibly.
    Why not have cows only spawn near a special grass. The grass can spawn randomly in the world, with cows spawning near it. The grass itself could be harvested from the environment for seeds and grown in a field. This would make farming possible too.

      Do all this and it would be awesome. Farms would just be one more thing we could tend to and fortify, plus they would solve the problem of having to decide whether or not to kill your pet cows

    I’m not a fan of this at all I would prefer taming the animals and having a limit of up to two of each animal besides birds

    I know this is probably late and not related to the post, but do you think you could add special effects such as aurora borealis over cold biomes? It would be very interesting and maybe you could make it hard to reach as to give the player some type of goal to set if they find a cold biome large enough.
