Dusk, dawn and stars

The first new feature finished for Alpha 1.13 is a revamp of the sky. The current sky was boring, so I decided to add some nice colored sunrises/sunsets and stars. At the same time I made it all faster, the old sky was a bit of a hack because I never had time to do it properly. Until now.

Here’s a time-lapse video of day/night cycle:

One idea I had to do with sky was of adding navigation. You could find your latitude by measuring height of a star or sun. Longitude could be calculated by measuring position of a known star and knowing local time at some fixed point (for example the coast). It would require adding a sextant and a chronometer tools. With navigation in, I could add secret caches of items hidden at random world points, and only give the player the coordinates. He’d have to make the instruments, learn how to determine his position and find the caches. There are a few issues with it though, one of them is that the world is infinite so normal navigation does not work here. Also it’s not easy to get good horizon because visibility range is too short.

one option would be to NOT make the world infinite…not sure how easy that would be, but it could make sense…

    Great work Kaalus.

I like that you listen to suggestions from the community and still do your own things with the game as well.

I like how instead of going the easy route and using compasses and maps you go for different types of measurement tools and calculations. That’s how you know this game has a good programmer. I would suggest that when looking at the sky it zooms in and shows different stars and could tell you the name of a certain star (or we could name it ourselves) and that would be the star used to guide us back home. i hope we don’t have to do the calculations ourselves cuz i don’t play the game to do math :D

How About Instead Of Zooming In at the sky You could build a Telescope and then look at the sky using it.

I like that idea. That would be cool if there was a telescope.

That is a spectacular scenery kaalus. Great idea concerning the sextant, not too sure about the chronometer though.

That looks fantastic — you could, instead of removing the infinite world completely, add a separate mode for a finite map.

Or just have a map that you can change the mode to loop or no loop. Loop is where the world goes in a circle so you can leave home in one direction and go around the whole world and come back from the opposite direction

Nice great job ur so awesome at that… I have an idea you should make a thing where you can place a variety of different colored markers to bring you back there… Ex: walk in ur house and place a blue marker then walk over to find a good mining place so u place a red marker etc… Also there should be a way to find treasure boxes full of guns preferably or gold for currency… Also they should be rare…

Alot of people like the idea of a navigation tool. I personally like it.
On a side note what are the exact parameter for sleeping, and if a bed is ever added will it allow you to sleep in a underwater base?
