Dropbox is still in progress, I am now working on a proper UI list with swipe-to-scroll behavior. Might later use it to replace the kludgy worlds list in Singleplayer screen. In the meantime, to cheer myself up, I am also slowly picking the remaining low hanging fruit. The next one are fences:

At the moment the player can jump over them normally, but animals will not do it, at least in theory. Here’s a caged wildboar:

It would be convenient to be able to have some way of having boars spawn in a predetermined location ( I have a boar pen, and a courtyard hunting reserve, with water, grass, et. al, but alas, no boars.), with some in-world object…

Great idea! Spawning animals would be awesome. You could do it like with the chicken eggs in minecraft! And another little problem is that if you go to far away from the caged animal it dissappears ! Sry my english is bad :D

Hi Buurbinator. Off topic, but just to let you know that your comment is the 2000th comment on this blog :-)

Spawning animals by placing “eggs” is a good idea. Don’t know when I’ll have time to look into it though…

How are you going to lure them in? And won’t they disappear after you leave the draw distance? Also, are there fence doors?

I believe there should be a special door for fences such as gates so that the doors don’t look out of place

Thanks for adding fences Kaalus! That was really kind :). I was wondering if this means the boars can be kept as pets or still dissapear. If they still dissapear i reccomend a system for making them pets and then add them to an array in which it can only hold up to 5 items in it. Just a suggestion but i am not a expert programmer so don’t yell at me if i’m wrong :)

I agree! Enclosed animals needs to be stored somewhere so that it won’t disappear.
      Very good work Kaalus!

Is there a way to make it so that animals within the fences don’t disappear? obviously there would need to be a limit on the size of a “pen” but to me that seems like a feasible solution.

What about implementing the possibility to pile fences up in the meantime? It could bring cool wooden walls, palisades etc.

Here is something I just thought of Kaalus.

Instead of adding an item like eggs to spawn mobs, maybe you can just add a kind of bait. Like bird seed to attract birds and a type of spice (from a type of plant) that you can add to bird meat to create boar bait.

I feel like it would add some more depth to hunting and make it easier for people to trap pets.

    Just an idea :)

See that would be a good idea for survival mode but for creative mode eggs are a better idea.

Off topic, but something I dislike is he amount of shadowing for blocks and other objects. For example, look at how much shadowing there is around the fence. I understand if you are trying to make an ambient occlusion effect, but it just doesn’t seem right..

    • Posted March 21, 2012 at 10:18 | Permalink | Reply

Indeed that’s a problem. At the moment the algorithm is all-or-nothing solution, that is either a block casts shadows around or it doesn’t. Changing it so that it’s a gradual value is easy and I contemplated it many times, but the problem is it sits right in the middle of the most performance critical piece of code. And it would make it slower…

I have noticed the shadows with flowers too. In creative mode I was making a field of roses and it looked odd because of all the shadow.

Kaalus, do you think you could add basalt stairs to 1.9? I am building a black tower out of basalt to match (mirror) a Marble tower I built, and there are no basalt stairs to put inside.

Everyone wants to show their creativity or skills through different things .some shows through their art, poetry, some show through their command on languages etc. Design is an intuitive, sensitive and good judgment by which some demonstrate the inner talent. Thanks for making fences. It is awesome! I only have one question though. How are you able to make fence through the crafting table? I’m having a hard time trying to think of a way to make it.
