Dropbox progress

I finally managed to finish logging in and getting a list of files from Dropbox.

There are 2 kinds of Windows Phone apps – Silverlight and XNA. All the libs and utilities on the web that deal with Dropbox (or any other cloud service for that matter) are geared towards Silverlight – it has all the UI controls, UI centric threading model and a built-in web browser.  Unfortunately Survivalcraft is XNA, which means I have to do all this stuff myself. Even silly things like packing files into a zip cannot be easily done :-(

So yesterday, when I saw the contents of my Dropbox folder on screen in Survivalcraft I was quite happy. But I still need to add scrolling to the list control and get the files downloading and uploading, packing and unpacking to/from their appropriate locations.

In the next release I also plan to add downloading of custom texture packs. If this works out you’ll be able to repaint your world the way you like.

Awesome!! Can’t wait!! How are the texture packs going to work by the way. And, i also suggest adding tree regrowth and planting in the next update. Also farming if you feel like it. But if you add farming make sure to add fences.

Also make sure to add a refresh, delete, and edit button to the list control for easier user interface plz. Edit is for people to rename, and move around folders. Also plz add signs to the game so that when people enter other peoples worlds they can tell what is there or just so that we can name things.

Will the texture packs require much knowledge or file editing , not that i have a problem its just some people may find it hard to do . I dont know if its possible but an Ingame editor may be a good idea , just one that gives you a 64×64 Grid for each block texture and you just fill in the blocks using colour . you could then save and upload these to dropbox etc for others to download .

Thanks for the updates on your progress , only the best game creators are able to make the game and give detailed info on progress at the same time , gives a more comunity based feel to it :)

Thanks for the suggestions but I’m not going to put an image editor in the game. That would be a hell of a job :-) You will have to edit in outside, preferably on a PC and upload to Dropbox.

Hmm maybe you should create your own texture pack first with detailed instructions cuz i don’t get it.

“Texture pack” is a single image in png format, 256×256 pixels. Each 16×16 slot is for one item (sometimes items use multiple slots). I’ll release the default texture pack so that you can modify it and upload the modified version.

i may be wrong but this kinda sounds like how this other game i have (on PC) does its textures, you have an image file and it basically wraps around the object ingame

to re-color the object you open the picture file and paint a particular section ex: top left corner represents the front side of the object

        kinda like origami no? xD

Woah custom texture packs sounds excellent! Didn’t even imagine that would be on the horizon. I have a suggestion: Since getting creative mode, I have gone crazy on building amazing big structures and I want to show them off. Only trouble is, they are so big that they go beyond the range of visibility in some cases. I would like to see some kind of special photo-taking feature where you temporarily increase the range of visibility for the purposes of taking the photo. Also maybe some option to render it to a shiny hi-res version would also be really cool. Imagine how amazing the showcase on the forum would be then??

    What do you think Kaalus?

PS I deduced from your use of the word “brilliant” that you are from the UK. Also I want to really acknowledge your work on this game. It’s head and shoulders above any other game I’ve tried on my WP7. Keep up the great work!

Just cuz he says brilliant doesn’t mean he is from the UK… Or does it?

I think I saw him write the word colour. Maybe it was favourite. The next thing we know he’ll be saying rubbish and talk about bowler hats. :-P

How do you get water to go away that you throw out of a bucket.

Wherever you placed the water (on the exact tile) just put two blocks of something there (sand, dirt, wood, etc.) after the first block you put down it’ll rise so you need to put the second block down as well(: hope it helps!

you can alos use an empty bucket on the exact tile where you put the water and it picks it up.
