Tools required to harvest blocks

As a side effect of introducing buckets I had to add a concept of minimal tool required to harvest a block. For example if you spill water bucket on the top of a snowy mountain, the water will flow downwards destroying all snow blocks along the way. I didn’t want all these snow blocks to turn into snowballs. They should just disappear. So I added “tool level”.

Water (and all other non-direct effects, such as e.g. removing supporting block) has tool level 0. Bare hands and wooden tools have level 1. Stone tools have level 2. Iron tools have level 3.

All harvestable block types have minimum tool level associated with them. For example snow requires at least level 1 tool to produce snowballs (so using water will not work).

Most blocks have a required tool level of 0, which makes them behave the same as in previous versions. The only exceptions at the moment are:

  • Snow: 1 – (needs at least bare hands to harvest)
  • Copper ore, iron ore: 2  (need  at least stone tools to harvest)
  • Grass trap: 3 – (needs at least iron tools to harvest)

Hope this is not too complicated :-)

This is good, but bad. Good because of the levels, bad because I can’t find iron

So, if everything has a default of 0, doesn’t that mean you can decimate entire landscapes by chucking water at them?

Water doesn’t destroy everything, only certain things. Level has nothing to do with it, level only determines whether the block will disappear completely or turn into a pickable item.

Sounds reasonable. But I think that spikes (trap) should also be on level 3.

Off the topic – since the last water update – water flows properly, but it does all the time, even when the current is settled? Before, we could make water-lifts in the mines, now water tends to trap me inside all the time… Is this as you want it to be?

Im thinking that now is the right time to introduce a tutorial. So for exapmple. First time play is a tutorial which can be ended.
I can imaging that at least half the players on survival raft don’t follow this blog. Most people on here only know what to do because of ther blog. And as new WP markets pop up. It would be the perfect time for basics of crafting moving and even the settings in a tutorial :)

Really good idea ! I think you should make a tutorial which you can start from the main menue and where you are in a small room of bedrock (or something you can not destroy ) and the programm teaches you the basic movements and settings in small parcour or something like that. :D (sry for my english its bad i know )

So you need iron tools to recollect grass traps?

    • Posted March 8, 2012 at 22:42 | Permalink | Reply

Yes. Which is an improvement over 1.7 where you could not collect them at all :-)
