Game modes

There are, roughly speaking, two kinds of people who like to play games like Survivalcraft or Minecraft. Some just love to build, and any obstacles preventing them from creating the next great piece of architecture are just an annoyance for them. Others like to play the game and feel the challenge of staying alive, hear the monsters crawling on top of their puny shelter trying to get in. For them, building has only the utilitarian aspect.

As the survival element of the game becomes more fleshed out and living in Survivalcraft world becomes dangerous, the first group of people would have their fun ruined. It’s time to introduce game modes.

Initially there will be 3 game modes: Harmless, Challenging and Cruel.

Challenging mode is the default one, and in this mode the game will play pretty much the same as previously.

Harmless mode exists to cater for the needs of the building folk. It is not completely devoid of danger, but it will be much easier to stay alive there. Animals will not attack unprovoked, fall damage is reduced, health regeneration is very fast, and all digging is speeded up by 25%.

Cruel is for the extremists. That mode is the same as Challenging, but with one twist. You only have one life. Once you die, there is no respawning back into your world. Everything you made is lost forever.

These 3 modes will become available in Alpha 1.7 on top of all the features already mentioned.

In the future I also plan to introduce another mode, which will give you access to unlimited number of resources and some form of flying. This is too much work to fit in Alpha 1.7 timeline though.

Btw. I’m still on track to submit Alpha 1.7 today, which means you should get it around Friday.

Will we be able to switch modes during a game? (harmless or challenging for example)

The engine supports that but there is no UI to do it in Alpha 1.7

So how do I choose which mode my current world is? Or is it automatically set to challenging?

Hi Generalguy41. All the old worlds are set to challenging. In 1.7 you will need to start a new world to change game mode.

Hi jriot10. Thanks, I always wanted to change “ignot” to “ingot”. This was driving me mad :-)
But it’s quite difficult to rename pages, because all links to a page will break when you do so. Better to watch out for typos and capitalization when creating new pages.

Yay omg! Look at kaalus go! Pleasing everyone at once! Haha a round of applause is in order I do believe, also because of the just building mode which will be great to showcase buildings would it be to much to ask for a few more stats or something for the cruel mode maybe a more precise timer, # of kills or how many hearts of health we have had to eat back? And the ability to take a screen of the stats to showcase our survival talents? Lol

This sounds pretty cool. Looks like I will be making new worlds once in a while for some cruel fun lol. But my normal world will never go beyond challenging, I don’t want to lose my castle lol.

Wow. This update is going to be awesome. Harmless and cruel mode sound the most interesting. Having one life sounds like a splendid challenge. If I could ask for one thing in a future update, I’d like to see the mining time sped up to 50 or 75% in harmless mode. I like mining and finding resources as opposed to free build mode but sometimes it gets overly tedious at the amount of time it takes to dig out large areas especially since I don’t have much free time at the moment. Pretty please:) I can’t wait to trap my first animal. Might keep him as a pet lol.

Maybe in Cruel mode the animals could be a bit more aggressive than in Challenging?

Can’t wait for the update in later updates you should add a creative mode where you have every resource in the game and every block and one hit on blocks:)

Hmm. I dont think flying and unlimited resources are necessary features. It kind of decreases the awesomeness of some of the amazing buildings I have seen people make. It would make building amazinggg buildings too easy. Its not impossible to create something you find really cool, it just takes some dedication. That’s something to be proud of, not “hey look I built this mansion in an hour”
. On the other hand, I do like the harmless mode idea. Decreased build time is a more reasonable feature for a creative mode than flying. less fall damage and increased health regen is all someone needs to build something very appealing. We would look like fairies if we could fly and poop resources out of our butts. I say lets keep it semi-realistic
