Christmas themed Alpha 1.2 submitted!

Wohoo again! I got the testing done and submitted it for certification. Looking at previous submissions it should reach you on Thursday. Unless there is a fail of course.

Snow has added some overheads, so I spent most of today trying to squeeze last ounces of performance from the terrain generation code, but I only managed a meagre 5%. Sadly, it is pretty well optimized already, so no miracles. There is still one area to do with frustum culling that I want to check in the future, but honestly I have little confidence that something tangible is achievable there.

On the positive note, I solved the memory usage problem. Garbage collector seems to be a bit lazy on the phone, and sometimes it lets the memory creep up to crazy values. If Microsoft require that apps stay below 90MB, they should tune the collector so that just before going over that threshold it attempts a full collection. Doing it manually is not nice.

1.2 is a pretty massive update. Just as with the previous one, a lot more stuff ended in it that I initially planned. That’s because towards the end of it I decided that I want to make it Christmas themed :-) There is snow and ice, and you can even craft a Christmas tree.

As before, here’s the full list of changes:

  • “Sneak” mode which prevents you from falling off the ledges and makes movement more precise
  • Wooden stairs, stone stairs, sandstone stairs and stone brick stairs added
  • Wooden slab, stone slab, sandstone slab and stone brick slab added
  • Wooden doors, iron doors and cell doors added
  • Ladders added
  • New type of window block added
  • Increased durability of iron tools
  • Added ability to disable/enable GUI being rendered to screenshots (in settings)
  • Made dropped items stay for longer before disappearing.
  • Leaves now decay if all the nearby wood has been chopped down
  • Added snow and ice
  • Added craftable Christmas tree
  • Maximum tap distance increased, should help with taps not registering properly for some people
  • Fixed a bug with buttons and dragging (reported by anteater80)
  • Improved sandstone looks to better match sand

Unfortunately, the fix for the bug to do with wicker lamp being invisible through water had to be reverted. It caused more problems than it solved. So the lamps will stay as they were for now.

The long standing issue of leaves floating in the air after all the wood has been chopped down is fixed. They will decay when you sleep. Unfortunately, this does not happen to pre-existing floating leaves. The workaround is to place a piece of wood next to them and chop it down. It will trigger the algorithm.

Kaalus, I LOVE YOU (and I’m not gay)
You made so much for this Update and SC hasn’t reached an month since it’s released.
As I said before, I’m very, very glad, that I bought SC early after release.
When this Update is released (very sad, that I have to wait till Thursday, but then it’s done and I hope, that SC won’t get rejected), I definitely create a new world to begin from scratch. And then, I will build a nice house. With all new things, there are many possibilities, per example a cellar (not really possible without ladders) and a good roof.

I hope, your effort will be rewarded. You deserved it.
Continue with your work and SC will be a great clone of Minecraft, but with a different goal and feeling.

You, sir, are the man. Is snow/ice localized to particular areas or is this a “seasonal thing”?

Snow and ice spawn where temperature is low (terrain generator has a concept of temperature). So yes, it’s localized.

Doesn’t the Lumia 800 has a separate GPU? It would be interesting how Survivalcraft performs on it!

    This is awesome Kaalus, contratulations!

On next update it will be great if you could focus on the minning and survival stuff.

Having more ores, recipes, and some duties more, like having to eat or something will add more entertaiment to this great game.

In the long term, I will love to see red stone and pistons in SC :-)

Cannot wait for this update, game is so new yet so much work has been put into it, kudos >.<

Would it be possible to make iron ore more visible, I find it nearly impossible to spot it on my LG optimus 7q.

Omg, the last update only got released like, yesterday(that’s how it feels :P) and we have yet another power packed update. By Merlin, Kaalus, you are so hardworking and deserve some recognition. I should nominate SC for WP Game of The Year.

Amazing, it took a lot more time to Notch to create Minecraft. Are you ever planning a multiplayer feature?

Kaalus, are you planning performance improvements? The game produces very low fps on my Omnia 7 on normal graphics settings. I think it would be a great idea to make view distance configurable… However, the game is still terrific. A WHOLE Lot better than official Pocket Edition.

Try turning things off that are running in the background. i have the Omnia 7 and I can play on the best settings and it doesn’t effect its performance. It maybe a case that ‘every phone is different’ but I doubt it.
