Tree Planting In Survival

In creative mode you can plant saplings anywhere (as long as it’s in dirt or grass) and they will grow almost instantly into trees, regardless of area.

Not so in survival. In survival trees are very picky and will only grow if the conditions are right and will take a very long time to do so (about one game day). Even if the conditions are perfect, they may still wither. Good advice: plant lots of saplings.

To help you with deciding where each tree is to be planted, I added a thermometer. I also wanted to add hygrometer, but I ran out of time for 1.13.

As some of you (especially those who meddled in the chunks.dat file) know, each place in the game has an associated humidity and temperature values. They determine what kind of plants and terrain get generated there and what is the shade of grass/water/leaves.

With a thermometer you can instantly tell what temperature it is at a given spot. The thermometer item has a scale made of 5 dots. Here’s the temperature value associated with each dot (starting from the bottom): 2, 5, 8, 11 and 14.

Here’s what temperatures trees like the most: Spruce 1.5, Birch 7.5, Oak 10.

All trees like humidity. The more the better, but because you don’t have a hygrometer yet you have to judge by color of grass (or abundance of other plants). The more juicy the green, the more humidity is in the area.

Happy planting once 1.13 arrives.

[EDIT] Thermometer looks like that:

Nice, In the future could you make it like the mod for minecraft:nature overhaul, trees when their leaves break saplings automatically fall and plant themselves and the factors of their growth is the same that is in the game now

Kaalus what about NPC’s? Did you see my posts in the 1.13 Release Post

Yep I’ve seen it. I’ve not yet decided what will be the main new thing in 1.14. So far I am doing lots of bugfixing. Among others ladder dismounting bug is gone :-)

Npc’s would be awesome I would love it. Its kinda weird with a village with no people but yourself

It would not be very “survival-based” if they are a friendly NPCs. Unless kaalus wants to have the game become a “civilization builder” (spin-off maybe) It would not work…

No no, it could work like I said there could be bandits that are out in the wild, and in towns based on how you treat them that’s how they’ll treat you back and based on what I’ve seen other people would want NPCs too

I understand what you mean. I just do not see how that ties in with the “survival” theme. I am pretty sure it is supposed to be a “deserted island – err. Continent- type thing. But that is just my opinion.

But I’m pretty sure your not the only person on the continent your on, there would be natives deep inland from the ocean. And if you really were the only person there that wouldn’t be realistic. You wouldn’t encounter any natives on a huge continent that’s bound to have people?

See, this is good, we are synergizing. Instead of just asking for NPCs, now we are offering detailed ideas to kaalus. I like that idea, groups of natives deep inland. But it would have to be a very long travel to see them. That way, it is the best of both ideas. But, I think a town would not be good. A collection of tents, huts, or yurts, nomad style, is better…

A settled town would, again, seem a bit off for this game.

I also agree about us having conversations about ideas and us “synergizing”. I also agree (again) about not actual towns and cities, huts and small villages would seem more realistic for the game.

Warping is a good idea, but I’m also interested in others modes of transport for survival modes. If you added horses, we could tame and ride them.

Kaalus if you don’t decide to add NPCs ( which I think would be the best option) could you add a fishing system, something less complicated code? It would be a useful to get food if all the animals in an area are killed ( which I will probably do) there could be certain circumstances on how you could catch fish, like the “water hole” has to be a large enough size for fish to live in?

An easy solution for faster means of travel could be a saddle. It canbe rode on with a bull. You should make it so it be cunstructed easily but difficult to capure and attach to a bull. this would save me loads of time

Wires, logic gates, various switches, a battery. Mostly for creative and adventure mode so that you can do intelligent mechanisms.

Ok so I am standing in a untouched grove of trees. I grab some leaves and craft saplings. I then go around the same type of trees and plant saplings why do I get dead trees? Provided one takes how long till I got a full size tree?

    • Posted January 15, 2013 at 18:14 | Permalink | Reply

The saplings need the following to grow into a tree:
      – space (if there’s anything blocking the way the sapling will wilt)
      – temperature (low for spruces, temperate for birches, high for oaks)
      – humidity (high for all the trees)
If all the conditions are met, the tree should grow.

Ok since there are other trees nearby I would think the temp and humid are in check. How much space and what could be in the way? Working on flat open ground with grove of like trees.
